Potential Evidence of Ancient Life Discovered on Mars
LOS ANGELES,Sept. 10 (Xinhua) – NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered compelling evidence suggesting โthe possible presence of ancient microbialโข life on Mars.A rock sample, dubbed “Sapphire Canyon,” collected from a formation โขnamed “cheyava Falls” withinโฃ Jezero Crater, exhibits โคpotential biosignatures, as detailed in a new study published Wednesday in the journal โ Nature.
A biosignature, โaccordingโค to NASA, isn’t โdefinitive proof โคof life, but rather a substance or structure that could โ have a biological origin, requiring โfurther investigation to confirm its source.โข
perseverance identified the Cheyava Falls โsite during exploration of the “Bright Angel” formation in July 2024.โ this formation consists of rocky outcrops borderingโค the Neretva Vallis,โ a 400-meter-wide ancient river โฃvalley โฃthat once fed into Jezero Crater. โขThe geological โcontext suggests a pastโ surroundings conducive to โlife.
“This is the most promising indication we’ve hadโ yet that โlife may have once existed on Mars,” statedโข acting NASA Administrator Sean duffy. “The โidentification of โa potential biosignature represents aโ significant โฃleap forward in our understandingโข of theโค Red Planet.”
Analysis of the sedimentary rocks composing theโ Bright Angel formation reveals โฃa composition of โclay and silt – materials known on โขEarth toโข effectively preserve traces of past microbial activity. Furthermore, the rocks are abundant in โorganic โcarbon, โsulfur, oxidized iron, and phosphorous, a combination ofโข elements that โฃcould have provided energy for ancient microbial metabolisms.”The presence of these chemical building blocks is exciting,” โexplained Joel Hurowitz, a Perseverance scientist at Stony Brook University โฃandโ lead โขauthorโข ofโข the study.โฃ “However,โข identifying these compounds wasn’t enough. We had to carefully analyze the data to determine โif โคtheir arrangement and concentrationโ could point towards a biological origin.”
“Sapphire Canyon” isโข one ofโข 27 rock โcoreโ samples Perseverance has collected since itsโฃ landing in Jezero โCrater in February โ2021, and will be a key focusโฃ for โคfuture analysis aimed at definitively determining โฃwhether mars once harbored life.
