President Russell M. Nelson, church president and medical pioneer, dies at age 101

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 28, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Russell M. Nelson: A Life of Medicine, Ministry, adn Faith

Russell‍ M. Nelson, President⁢ of ⁢The Church of Jesus Christ of ‍Latter-day Saints, passed away on May 17, ⁢2024, at the age of 99. His life was marked by a distinguished career in medicine and decades of dedicated service within his faith.

Born in 1924,‌ President Nelson initially pursued a path in cardiac surgery, becoming a renowned heart surgeon. He earned degrees from the University of Utah and the University⁢ of Minnesota, and served as a⁣ research fellow⁤ at the University of Michigan. ⁣His surgical expertise led to important ‍contributions in the field, including pioneering work with ‌open-heart surgery and the development of the Jared heart – one ‌of the first artificial hearts to be used in a human. A ‌pivotal moment occurred ⁢in 1979 when, ⁤while performing open-heart surgery, he felt a⁤ profound spiritual calling, leading him to devote the remainder of⁣ his life ⁣to full-time‌ religious service.

Prior to becoming President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1984, President Nelson held ‌various leadership positions within the Church. He served as a regional representative overseeing members in the Kearns, Utah area and at Brigham Young University. Earlier roles ⁣included stake ‍president, responsible for overseeing multiple congregations,⁢ and general president of the Church’s Sunday School.

As⁢ a general authority,he contributed to numerous Church councils and boards, including the Temple and Family History ⁤Executive Council, the Priesthood and ‌Family Executive Council, the Missionary Executive Council, and the Church Educational⁣ System⁤ Board of Education, which he chaired. He also provided counsel to ⁤the church History Department. He played ‍a key ‍role in expanding missionary work into ⁤Eastern ‌European nations during the presidency of Ezra Taft ⁣Benson.

President Nelson’s accomplishments earned him recognition in ”Who’s Who in the World,” “Who’s Who in America,” and “Who’s Who in religion,” publications recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

Throughout his ministry, President Nelson was a tireless traveler, ⁢visiting ⁤133 countries as a ‌general authority. As Church President, beginning in 2018, he embarked on five worldwide ministry tours, visiting locations including England, Israel, ⁤Kenya, ‌India, and Thailand, as well as South America and⁢ the Pacific. These travels involved meetings with both Church ⁣members and⁣ government ⁢and religious‍ leaders.

His‌ teachings consistently emphasized the importance of self-mastery and a devoted relationship with Jesus Christ. ⁢In April 2017, ‌he encouraged ‌members to draw upon the ⁣power of christ ⁢through‌ study, faith, and covenant keeping. He frequently urged members ⁣to read the Book of Mormon and to cultivate joy even amidst life’s difficulties, stating in 2016 ‍that joy ⁤stems from focusing on God’s plan of⁤ salvation and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

President Nelson also prioritized temple ⁢worship. During his tenure as Church President, he announced 15 new temples in April 2024,⁣ bringing the total number of temples announced during his presidency to 200 – more ⁢than half of the 382 temples operating worldwide. He⁤ expressed gratitude for the⁤ accelerated pace of temple construction, ‍testifying that Jesus Christ leads the Church and is preparing for his return.

Details regarding his funeral arrangements have not yet been released.

Title: New Dinosaur Fossil Reveals Predator’s Final Meal

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor September 28, 2025
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Joaquinraptor: ⁢A ‌Formidable Predator of Ancient Argentina

A newly discovered dinosaur, Joaquinraptor, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world ⁤of⁢ South ⁣American predators just before the extinction event ⁤66 million years ago. Unearthed in Argentina’s Chubut Province in ⁤2019, this megaraptoran dinosaur‌ was a significant apex predator⁣ in its warm, humid, coastal ecosystem.

Joaquinraptor was a substantial meat-eater, though its predatory style differed markedly from‍ its North American contemporary, Tyrannosaurus rex. While T. rex boasted a massive skull and powerful bite, Joaquinraptor possessed a more lightly built skull, measuring 24-28 inches long, and relatively small, ⁢though sharp and curved,⁢ teeth. Rather of relying on brute force, Joaquinraptor likely ⁣utilized its long arms and⁣ three-fingered hands, each tipped with sharp claws – including a prominent sickle-shaped claw on the middle finger – to‌ actively capture prey.

Evidence suggests ⁢ Joaquinraptor ⁤wasn’t‌ a picky eater. The fossil remains included a ⁣humerus (upper forelimb bone) from a crocodile‌ within the⁤ dinosaur’s ‌jaw, indicating it had been‌ actively consuming this formidable‍ predator when it died. Beyond⁢ crocodiles, Joaquinraptor likely preyed upon plant-eating dinosaurs common to the area, including⁤ young ⁢titanosaurs (long-necked giants), hadrosaurs (duck-billed dinosaurs), ⁤and potentially othre ⁢species.

The remarkably complete skeleton – including much of the⁤ skull, shoulder girdle, forelimbs,⁤ hind⁣ limbs, vertebrae, and ribs – has ⁣allowed paleontologists ‍to estimate⁤ the dinosaur‍ was approximately 19 years⁤ old at the time of ‌its death, likely sexually mature but perhaps not fully⁤ grown.⁤

This discovery is notably important because megaraptorans are a poorly understood group ⁤of dinosaurs. Joaquinraptor ⁤ pushes back the known timeline for this lineage, demonstrating they thrived until the very end of the dinosaur⁣ age. The ‌anatomical⁤ differences between joaquinraptor and Tyrannosaurus, despite potential ‍evolutionary links, highlight that⁢ there was more then one accomplished strategy⁤ for being ‌a top predator during‌ the Cretaceous period.

Las Vegas Skydivers Injured After Parachute Malfunctions

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 25, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

LAS VEGAS – Two skydivers sustained serious injuries after a parachute malfunction during a jump south of Las Vegas on September 17, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

the incident occurred near Jean, Nevada, when two sets of jumpers exited a small plane at an altitude of 11,000 feet. One pair experienced issues with both their primary and reserve parachutes.

Investigators reported to police that the primary parachute “was not working and also it could have,” and the backup parachute’s deployment was hampered by a slide that failed to fully extend. Consequently, the skydivers impacted the ground at speeds between 35 and 45 mph.

Both individuals were transported to UMC Trauma by Mercy Air with notable injuries.

the Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident. Skydiving carries inherent risks, and proper parachute function is critical for a safe landing. Standard skydiving procedures include rigorous equipment checks and dual-parachute systems as a safety measure.

Health ‍Utah Offers Comprehensive Weight⁤ Loss Approach, Addressing Root‌ causes

This‌ article promotes Health Utah’s weight loss program,⁣ emphasizing a holistic approach that goes ‍beyond simple calorie restriction. Here’s a breakdown of⁢ the‌ key points:

The Problem with Traditional ‍Diets:

* Weight gain and stubborn weight loss are ⁣often symptoms of underlying health issues. These include depression, insomnia, hormone imbalances, gut health problems, liver/gallbladder issues, insulin/leptin‍ resistance, toxins, and deficiencies.

  3. Customized ‍Protocol of Care: Addressing identified health conditions through a tailored plan including therapies, supplementation, hypnotherapy, and coaching.
  4. Customized food⁢ Plan: Creating a enduring food‍ plan based on individual body needs, avoiding restrictive diets (no calorie ‌counting, macro tracking, or eliminating entire food groups).

Special Offer:

* “2-for-1” Weight Loss Package: $59 for two people to receive ‌testing, a 17-page report, the proprietary survey,⁤ and a consultation⁤ with Dr.‌ Roberts.⁢ (The scan alone ⁢normally⁤ costs $300 per person).

Calories, Fat, and Exercise: Debunking Weight Loss Myths

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor September 22, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Challenging Conventional Wisdom: Scientist claims Common Weight Loss Advice is Wrong

SALT LAKE‌ CITY - For decades, the prevailing wisdom around weight⁢ loss has centered on calories ⁤in, calories out,⁤ and the necessity of rigorous exercise. But a new perspective,‌ championed by scientist Dr. ⁣Ben Bikman, argues these are among four “big lies” hindering effective and‌ lasting weight management.Bikman contends the focus should shift ‌from simply restricting calories to restoring the body’s metabolic balance.

Bikman, whose work centers on insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction, asserts that the customary approach overlooks the crucial role of hormones,⁢ especially insulin, in regulating fat storage. He claims that focusing ⁤solely on ⁢calories ignores the body’s complex signaling systems. “It’s not⁢ just about calories-it’s about restoring your ‍body’s metabolic balance,” he said. His company, HLTH code, offers a program designed to “reset those signals so your body burns fat instead⁣ of storing it.”

According to Bikman, the four key ‌misconceptions are: that calories are king, that all calories are created equal, that more exercise is ‍always better, and that fat‌ is bad. he argues that a diet ‌prioritizing whole foods and minimizing refined carbohydrates is essential for optimizing metabolic health.

“The ‌science is clear,” Bikman says. “When you give your body the right nutrition, everything changes – energy, immunity,‌ brain function,‌ appearance, and yes, weight loss.”

HLTH Code offers ⁤a⁣ full satisfaction guarantee for those skeptical of the approach.

“You have‌ nothing to lose but the extra pounds⁤ – and everything to gain in health, confidence, and vitality,” Bikman stated.
