Demi Moore Reveals Tom Cruise Felt ‘Embarrassed’ by Her Pregnancy During ‘A Few Good Men‘ Rehearsals
Demi Moore says Tom Cruise appeared uncomfortable with her eight-month pregnancy while preparing for the 1992 film A Few Good Men.Moore, who was expecting her second child, Scout Willis, at the time, shared the anecdote reflecting on the pressures faced by mothers in Hollywood.
“I think Tom was quite embarrassed,” Moore said, adding she felt okay about being visibly pregnant but “could tell he felt that it was a bit awkward.” The revelation comes as Moore reflects on a time when balancing motherhood and a career was often seen as mutually exclusive in the film industry.
According to Moore, the discomfort may have stemmed from the rarity of actresses openly embracing motherhood during that era. “It’s one of the many things, for me, that I just felt didn’t make sense,” she explained, noting the expectation to choose between career and family. “And so I challenged that to say, you know, ‘Why not? Why can’t you have both?’ But with that, I think, came a lot of pressure I put on myself to, in a sense, prove that it was possible.”
Moore described becoming “a bit of an overachiever” in her efforts to demonstrate that motherhood and a accomplished career could coexist, even admitting, “I look back at that time now, and I go, ‘What the fuck was I thinking?’ And what was I even trying to prove?” she highlighted the lack of support for mothers on set at the time, contrasting it with the more accommodating environment of modern Hollywood productions, where accommodations like breastfeeding and scheduling around maternal needs are more readily available.
Despite the challenges, Moore continued to push herself physically, even undertaking strenuous exercise during her pregnancy. She recounted a two-and-a-half-hour hike the day her water broke, as well as a 24-mile bike ride and a night of dancing shortly before giving birth, potentially contributing to her daughter arriving two-and-a-half weeks early.Variety has reached out to Cruise’s representative for comment.
