Santo Domingo, Oct. 14 (EFE) – The 12th International Theater Festival of the Dominican Republic will launch this Sunday, October 19th, with a performance of “The Mayor of Zalamea” by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, adapted by Jesús peña. The festival,dedicated to the Spanish company Teatro Corsario,runs through October 30th.
This year’s event will showcase a diverse range of theatrical productions, featuring fifteen international companies, seventeen Dominican troupes, and four state-supported groups, alongside contributions from students at the National School of Dramatic Arts (Enad). Spain is the guest of honor, and the festival is also dedicated to the memory of Dominican journalist and cultural figure Freddy Ginebra, founder of ‘Casa de Teatro.’
A total of 75 works will be presented, representing companies from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, cuba, Ecuador, France, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United States (featuring a special portrayal of the Dominican diaspora), and the Dominican Republic itself. Productions range from classic Spanish Golden Age plays to contemporary works, including “Crime Brûlé,” “The Conquest of the useless,” and “protocol of Brokenness.”
Dominican productions include “El Gallo,” ”El Sueño de la Vida,” “The Last Wedding,” “A la garata,” and “Romero y Julieta.”
Performances will be held in Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros, Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, and La Romana. The Ministry of Culture is offering tickets at 200 pesos (approximately three dollars) “with the aim of democratizing access to the theater.”
“The event invites us to celebrate diversity, reflect on society and reaffirm that theater continues to be one of the most living and transformative expressions of culture,” according to the Ministry of Culture.
