Durant Takes Pay cut to Join Rockets, Cites Team’s Rapid Rise and Organizational Culture
HOUSTON, TX – Kevin Durant opted for a contract below his maximum potential extension-valued at up to $122 million-to facilitate roster flexibility for the Houston Rockets, signaling a strong commitment to the team’s long-term vision. The decision, announced Monday, comes as the Rockets prepare to open their season Tuesday night against the Oklahoma Thunder.
Durant’s willingness to accept a reduced deal underscores his belief in the direction of the Rockets, who have undergone a dramatic transformation in the past two years under Head Coach Ime Udoka. Rising from the bottom of the NBA standings, Houston is now considered a contender in the Western Conference, a factor that heavily influenced Durant’s choice. This move allows the Rockets to pursue additional talent to bolster their roster around Durant, Udoka, and General Manager Rafael Stone.
“I talked to Rafael (Stone) and Ime (Udoka) about how they want to build the team and how I see myself in this organization,” Durant stated. “It was an ideal contract for both parties. I’m glad we settled it in advance – during the season we won’t have to listen to outside noise about my future. We will be able to focus only on basketball.”
Durant, beginning his 18th NBA season, expressed his admiration for the Rockets’ dedication to building a championship-caliber team. He observed the team’s progress even as an opponent, noting a consistent attention to detail throughout the organization, extending beyond the leadership of Stone, Udoka, and owner Tilman Fertitta.
“They where totally dedicated to making this team a contender. You could tell that even when you played against them,” Durant said.”Every day you come here, you see the attention to detail from everyone…That’s the kind of organization that wins.”
Joining his fifth NBA franchise, Durant also highlighted the maturity and professionalism of the Rockets’ existing roster, making his integration seamless. “They are very mature and take their work seriously. It was easy for me to fit in. Everyone is amazing. I am realy looking forward to the start of the season.”
