Researchers Dig Deep โคto Protect Rareโ River Lampreyโฃ in Northern โNetherlands
GASTEREN – Aโค chorus of “Sludge! No shot!” echoes along the Gastersche Diepje as โresearchers from โthe Hunze en Aa’sโค Water Board โmeticulously siftโฃ through riverbed sediment, searching for a critically โฃendangered species: the river โขlamprey. The annual โsurvey, โvital to โคunderstanding the lamprey’s spawning habits, underscores the precarious existence of this ancient fish โฃin the region.
The river lamprey, a jawless fish wiht a remarkable migratory life cycle, is clinging to survival in the Northern โNetherlands,โค with the Gastersche Diep serving as its only โฃremaining โspawning ground. This โlocalized population, isolated from others in the Veluwe, Achterhoek, and even Limburg,โฃ faces unique challenges. Understanding its needs โis crucial forโ conservationโ efforts, as the species’ continued presence hereโข is increasinglyโค threatened by habitat changes andโ water quality.
Each year, researchers sample a 250-meter stretchโ of the Diepje, using a ten-kilogram metal grab to collect sediment from the stream bed. “We carefully โคsieve everything we bring up,” explains Peter Paul Schollema of theโ hunze en Aa’s Water Board. “We look at โwhatโข lives in the bottom and what kind of โmaterial is present. Whenโ we find river lampreys, we measure โคthem and determine โtheir โage. This gives us a goodโ idea โof โโthe spawning grounds and howโค the โขriverโ lampreyโ develops โขhere.”
Along with the annual โintensive survey, a larger โข7.5-kilometer section is sampled comprehensivelyโ every three years. This broader assessment provides aโ wider view of the lamprey’s distribution โand โคoverall health within โคthe waterway.
The river lamprey undertakes an unusual journey, navigating from the Wadden Sea through the Eemskanaal, the โขcity of Groningen, and โคthe Drentsche Aa before โคreturning to gasteren to spawn. The โฃspecies’ ability toโ find its way to thisโฃ specificโ locationโข makes its preservation all theโ more critical, and ongoing research is essential to ensure its futureโฃ in the Northern Netherlands.
