NASA to Broadcastโ first Images โof Comet 3I/ATLASโ Captured byโ Spacecraft and Telescopes
WASHINGTON – NASA will hostโฃ a live event to share newly captured images of comet 3I/ATLAS, offering an unprecedented lookโ at the interstellar visitorโ as it journeys through our solar system. โThe broadcast beginsโค at 2 p.m. EST on Friday, January 12.
This marks a uniqueโ prospect for scientists to study anโฃ interstellar comet – one originating outside our โsolar system – for an extendedโฃ period. NASA’s diverse network of spacecraft and ground-based observatories are positioned to observe 3I/ATLAS throughout its time in our celestial โขneighborhood, providing complementary data and insights into its composition โand behavior. The comet’s current proximity allows for detailed study using a range โof โinstruments, offering a rare โคchance โto understandโค objects from beyond our solar system.
The event will feature commentary from dr. Nicky Agal-Goldman, acting director of the Division of Astrophysics, and โTom Statler, โchief scientist for small bodies in the solar system.โ Members of the media can participate โvirtually by submitting their facts to Molly Wasser โat molly.l.wasser@nasa.gov noโฃ laterโ than two hoursโค before theโข event.Theโข public can โฃsubmit โคquestions via social media using #AskNASA, with potentialโ for real-time answersโ in English. NASA โฃwill also have a subject โmatter โขexpert available for follow-upโ interviews in Spanish; requests should be directed to โMarรญa Josรฉ Viรฑas at maria-jose.vinasgarcia@nasa.gov.
