It took me a nutritious time to inquire about the mining concessions, their history and current events, and I also resorted to the use of modern territorial analysis techniques in real time, to determine the deplorable situation of depredation in which large swaths of the northern and northeastern territory are found. , where instead of sustainable tourism, protected areas and national parks reign, mining and hydrocarbon exploitation reigns, logging not appropriate to the nature of the landscape and biodiversity, African palm, cattle and agriculture irrational, accompanied by the intentional and well-paid burning of land that today is a boiling reality.
I went to review the advances that are being applied to large swaths of the territory thanks to LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, which allows the removal of the forested area and reveals the countless archaeological remains throughout Petén, southeastern Mexico and Belize, reflecting the surprising past of the Mayan civilization.
In relation to open-cast nickel mining, one does start to think about the positions of true stupidity and myopic profit motive of authorities, governments and pressure groups in favoring predation, instead of caring for the landscape, and taking advantage of it intelligently, not only to mitigate climate change, but also to study our past, expose it to new generations and quality tourism. And it is that Guatemala is one of the paradises of natural and cultural heritage. Here there are not only beaches, tapirs and jaguars –by the way in the process of extinction– but precious vestiges of a past that could very well be profitable for the community and the public good.
The responsible authorities, say that they are responsible for the environment and culture, do not attach importance to Quiriguá and its area of influence. And it is that if LiDAR technology were to be practiced in the area, one would indeed find countless historical vestiges that are associated with large buildings from El Mirador and Tikal until reaching Copán, passing of course through Quiriguá.
History records the Berger administration in the renewal of the nickel concessions, and from the jockeying of concessions between corporations it is observed how in Los Amates, near Quiriguá, the lands belonging to the Montúfar area have been looted, which turns out to be an area of incomparable beauty, surrounding Lake Izabal on the opposite side of the lake well known in history as EXMIBAL, with a violent and predation past.
