Mexico to Build ‌latin America‘s Most ⁣Powerful ‍Supercomputer

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico announced‌ Wednesday plans to construct a supercomputer projected to be the most powerful ⁤in Latin America,a move officials say will position the country⁤ at the forefront of artificial intelligence development and considerably expand its data processing capabilities.

The‌ project, named “Coatlicue” after the Aztec goddess ⁣of earth, is anticipated to be ⁣seven times more powerful than the current regional ⁤leader located in Brazil, according to José merino, head of the Telecommunications ⁤and‌ Digital Change Agency. President Claudia Sheinbaum ‍revealed the initiative‌ during her‌ daily press⁢ conference, stating construction is slated to⁤ begin next year,‍ though a specific location remains undecided.

This investment reflects a growing global race to⁢ harness the potential‌ of AI, with nations increasingly ⁣recognizing supercomputing power as critical infrastructure. Currently, Mexico’s most powerful supercomputer operates‌ at ⁤2.3 petaflops – one quadrillion operations⁤ per second. Coatlicue is projected to achieve a‍ capacity of ⁢314 petaflops, enabling ‌advancements in fields like climate modeling,‍ scientific research, and data⁤ analysis.

“It is going‌ to allow Mexico to⁤ fully get⁤ in on the use of artificial intelligence⁢ and⁣ the processing of data⁤ that today we don’t have⁣ the capacity to do,” Sheinbaum, an ‍academic and climate scientist, said.‌

The⁢ development comes as Latin American countries seek ‍to reduce their reliance on foreign technology⁢ and foster domestic innovation in⁣ the ‍rapidly evolving tech landscape. The Coatlicue project signals Mexico’s ambition to become⁣ a regional hub for AI ⁤research and development.

Hong Kong Resident Warns of New “Unidentified Package” Scam ⁣Targeting Double 12 Shoppers

A new scam exploiting the surge in online shopping during the Double 12 sales event ⁤is circulating, and authorities are urging caution ⁣regarding⁣ unsolicited packages. A Hong Kong citizen, known only as Threads, has alerted the public to a⁤ scheme where recipients are‌ tricked into unknowingly participating in illegal activities after receiving⁣ an unlabeled parcel. The scam leverages curiosity and ⁣the expectation of a bargain, perhaps leading to significant legal repercussions for‌ those who fall victim.

The scam operates by sending individuals ⁢an “unidentified⁤ package” ⁢containing⁢ goods used in fraudulent transactions - often ⁢without⁢ the recipient’s knowledge. Upon opening the⁤ package,⁣ the individual ‍becomes ⁣unwittingly complicit in a crime, such ‌as money laundering or the distribution of ⁤illegally obtained items. Threads’ warning comes as Double 12, a major online shopping festival ⁤on December 12th, drives a‍ massive increase in package deliveries, creating an ideal⁣ environment for scammers to operate undetected.

According to Threads, the scam’s‍ effectiveness lies in exploiting ⁣the recipient’s initial confusion and subsequent attempts to understand the ‌package’s contents. Once opened, the individual is immediately⁢ entangled in the fraudulent scheme.

Self-Protection Tutorial:

* Do ⁢Not Open: ⁤ If you receive ‌a package you did⁤ not order or one with no sender facts,do not open it.
* Contact Authorities: Immediately ⁢report the package to the Hong Kong Police Force’s ⁤Cyber Security Reporting Portal (https://www.cybersecurity.gov.hk/en/report-cyber-crime.html).
* Preserve Evidence: Keep the package intact and do not tamper with it⁢ in any way. This will ‌aid law enforcement⁢ in their examination.
* Document Everything: Take photographs of the package, including any labels or markings, and keep a record⁣ of all interaction related to the incident.

AI Valuations Rise: ECB Warns of Increasing Financial Stability Risks

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 26, 2025

ECB Flags Increasing Financial Stability Risks, Cites AI Valuations and Fiscal concerns

The European⁢ Central Bank (ECB) issued its semi-annual⁤ financial stability report on November 26th, warning that risks to Europe’s financial stability are “increasing.” The report highlighted excessively high asset valuations as a potential trigger for a sharp market correction,‌ alongside fiscal⁤ challenges‌ in certain countries‌ that could erode investor‍ confidence.

According to the ECB, a shift in market sentiment – potentially sparked by a deterioration in the growth outlook⁤ or ⁢disappointing developments regarding the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) – could lead⁤ to sudden market changes. The‌ report also cautioned⁣ that high levels ⁢of public debt in developed nations ‍could strain global bond markets, impacting ‍international capital flows and potentially causing currency⁢ shocks.

The ECB’s assessment aligns⁢ with growing‌ concerns voiced by central banks ⁢and regulators globally, given current record-high stock prices,⁤ rising public debt, and ongoing trade uncertainties.

Specifically, the rapid increase in valuations of companies involved in AI has drawn the⁣ attention ⁢of ‍authorities,‌ who fear a‌ potential correction. Investors have recently increased their investment⁢ in ‌AI-related technologies, though some ⁢analysts predict⁤ the S&P 500’s anticipated‍ rise to 7,000 may be delayed until next year. The S&P ‌500 is currently poised to experience ⁤its first⁤ monthly decline‍ since April.

The ECB report emphasized that “persistently high valuations and ⁤stock market concentration” elevate the probability of a important price correction.

However,ECB Vice president DeGuindos clarified at a press conference⁤ that the ⁤current situation differs from the dot-com bubble. He stated that AI companies possess a “very clear business⁤ plan” and demonstrate strong earnings, adding, “we can question valuations, but to say there’s a bubble doesn’t accurately reflect our view.”

The report further identified potential exacerbating factors, including⁢ “liquidity mismatches‍ in‍ open-end investment funds, high leverage in some hedge funds and lack of transparency in private markets.”

Regarding current risks, the ECB specifically ‍pointed to a “deteriorating trend in ⁤France‘s ⁣fiscal base.” France, the⁤ eurozone’s second-largest economy, is facing difficulties in controlling its budget deficit ⁣and debt ⁣levels.

The ECB also noted‌ that ⁢despite recent trade agreements, concerns surrounding the long-term ⁤economic and financial consequences of tariffs and⁤ broader⁢ trade uncertainties continue to⁣ shape the financial landscape of ‌the euro area.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years for Coup Attempt

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 26, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Bolsonaro Begins 27-Year Prison ⁣Sentence ‍for Coup Attempt

Former Brazilian President Jair bolsonaro has been ordered to begin a 27-year prison sentence ‌after being ⁣convicted of ⁤leading a plot to overturn ⁤the results of the 2022 election. The conviction, handed down⁣ by Justice Alexandre ⁣de Moraes, marks the first time a⁣ former Brazilian president has ‍been found guilty of attempting a coup.

The ‍sentencing follows an inquiry into attempts to illegally‍ retain power following Bolsonaro’s defeat to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Several other high-ranking officials have also been convicted and⁤ are now serving time. Army generals Augusto Heleno and Paulo Sérgio Nogueira are imprisoned at a military facility in Brasilia, while former Justice Minister Anderson Torres is held at⁢ the ‍Papuda⁤ penitentiary, also in the capital. Adm. almir garnier ⁣will serve his sentence at Navy ⁤facilities in Brasilia, and former Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto, another army general,is ‍imprisoned at a military facility ⁢in Rio de Janeiro.

Reactions to‍ the sentencing have been sharply divided. While some expressed outrage, with one individual stating, “I hate you, ⁤Alexandre de Moraes. You deserve hell,” others celebrated the outcome as a victory for Brazilian democracy. São Paulo city councillor Keit ⁣Lima, along ‍with other Black women who ‌had marched in ⁢Brasilia, marked the occasion with champagne, stating,”Today we can⁤ breathe and continue fighting for our democracy. ⁤Our democracy is young, but we wont it to⁢ live long.”

Justice de Moraes also revealed ‌that lawmaker and former head⁢ of Brazil’s intelligence agency Alexandre Ramagem is currently ‌at large in the United States and has ordered lower house Speaker Hugo Motta to strip Ramagem of his seat. While some within Bolsonaro’s party have discussed the possibility of an amnesty for the‌ former president, leaders ⁣acknowledge it would likely be overturned by the Supreme Court.

Despite being ineligible to run for office until at least 2030 due to‍ a previous ruling by Brazil’s top electoral court, Bolsonaro’s prison sentence is expected to extend that ineligibility to 2033. Polls ⁣indicate he would remain a competitive‍ candidate⁢ if allowed to run in ⁣next year’s election.

The case has drawn international attention, with former U.S. President Donald Trump calling the ⁢trial⁣ a “witch hunt.” Bolsonaro and Trump share a political alliance. The U.S.initially responded with a July order to raise tariffs on several Brazilian ‍exports‍ by 50 percent, but most of those tariffs have since been dropped following an⁣ improved relationship between Lula and Trump, who met at the ASEAN summit in October. The U.S. also imposed ⁣sanctions on de Moraes and other Brazilian ‌officials, but these measures did ⁤not prevent the trial from proceeding. ⁢Lula’s popularity reportedly benefited from the perception that⁢ he was defending Brazilian sovereignty.

bolsonaro ‍is⁤ not⁤ the only former Brazilian president to face imprisonment. Michel Temer (2016-2018)⁢ and⁢ Lula have both⁤ previously been incarcerated,‌ and Fernando Collor de Mello (1990-1992) is currently under house arrest due to a corruption conviction. Though, Bolsonaro is the first to⁤ be⁣ convicted of⁢ attempting a coup.

Consciousness in Birds: Research Reveals Evolutionary Insights

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 25, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Consciousness Divide: Researchers Probe‍ Evolutionary Roots of Awareness

Bochum, Germany – November 24, 2025 – A new inquiry from Ruhr University Bochum⁣ is tackling⁣ one of the most enduring mysteries in science: why did⁤ consciousness evolve in some animal species,⁣ while others appear to ‍function without subjective experience? The research, published today, seeks to pinpoint the⁢ neurological and evolutionary factors that led to the emergence of awareness, a capability that fundamentally shapes how certain ⁣creatures interact with the world.

The question of consciousness isn’t ⁢merely academic. Understanding its origins could illuminate the neural basis of human experience,‍ offering insights into conditions like coma and disorders of awareness. furthermore,it carries ethical implications for how we treat animals, influencing debates⁢ about animal rights and welfare. The study’s findings, researchers say,⁢ represent⁣ a crucial step toward building a complete framework for understanding ‍the spectrum of consciousness across the animal kingdom⁣ and predicting where ⁣it might arise in the future.

Researchers are focusing on‍ identifying key neurological features ⁣that correlate with consciousness. While a definitive “consciousness‌ center” remains elusive, the team hypothesizes that the complexity of neural networks,⁣ notably those involved in ⁤integrating data from different sensory modalities, plays a critical role.Species with more sophisticated brain structures and greater‌ capacity for internal modeling⁣ of the environment are more likely to exhibit conscious behaviour.

The‍ investigation draws on comparative ‍neuroanatomy, behavioral studies, and ‌computational modeling to assess the level of consciousness in various species. By analyzing‌ brain ⁤structures and observing how animals⁤ respond to stimuli, researchers⁣ aim to establish a set⁤ of neurological markers indicative of subjective experience. The team acknowledges the inherent‌ difficulty in objectively measuring‍ consciousness, but believes a multi-faceted approach will yield meaningful results.

The study‌ was provided ⁣by Ruhr University Bochum.
