BYD Pioneers Single-Piece Electric car Chassis, Signaling Shiftโ in Automotive Manufacturing
Shenzhen, China – BYD has begun utilizing โคa โฃrevolutionary single-piece chassis designโ for its electric vehicles, aโค manufacturing technique previously considered prohibitively โcomplex and expensive. The innovation, dubbed “Gigacasting” by some in the industry,โ promisesโ to considerably reduce production time and costs whileโ simultaneously enhancing vehicle rigidity and safety.
Traditional car manufacturing involves assembling numerous stamped and welded parts to form the vehicle’s chassis. BYD’s new approach casts the entireโ chassis from a single piece of metal using a gigantic press, mirroring methodsโ already adopted โby Tesla and โขToyota. This one-piece design addresses structural fragility concerns present in multi-part chassis, โคofferingโ “greatly increased rigidity” and improved force distribution for enhanced โฃimpact protection, accordingโ to the manufacturer.
The Gigacasting method is gaining traction as manufacturers seek to โstreamline production and lower โขexpenses. BYD states this technology offers “a perfect balance between high โคstrength, robustness and fatigue resistance.”โข While โcurrently focused โon larger vehicleโ models, the company suggests this approach โ”could influence the โขdesign โขandโฃ future production of heavy vehicleโฃ chassis.”
