NASA’s Perseverance โRover May Haveโฃ Discovered an Alien Rock on Mars
JEZERO CRATER, MARS – NASA’s Perseverance rover โคhas potentially discovered an iron-nickel meteorite โคwithin Jezero crater, a find that could shed newโข light on โthe history of impacts on the Red Planet and add to โคa small but growing collection of extraterrestrial visitors studiedโฃ onโค Mars. The unusual rock, nicknamed “Phippsaksla,” is currently under examination โฃto confirm its origins.
While past Mars missions -โค including โฃCuriosity, Chance, and Spirit – have previously identified meteorites like “Lebanon” โ(discovered in 2014) and “Cacao” (spotted inโค 2023) โwithin Galeโ Crater, located roughly 2,300 miles away, Perseverance had yet โto find one despite exploring a crater of similarโข age and with numerous smaller impact craters. This finding is notable because it could help scientists understand the distribution of meteorites acrossโ Mars and the processes that โขhave altered themโ over time. Ifโฃ confirmed, Perseverance will join the ranks of rovers that โhave โanalyzed fragments โคfrom beyond our planet.
the potential meteorite was observed by Perseverance’s camera, and NASAโค noted โคthe unexpected natureโข of the find. “As such, it has beenโข somewhatโ unexpected that Perseverance hadโค not seen iron-nickel meteorites within Jezero Crater, notably given its similar โขage to gale โcrater andโ number of smaller impact craters suggesting โthat meteorites did fall on the crater floor, delta and crater rim throughout time,” โคNASA โคstated.
Further analysis is needed โขtoโค definitively classify the rock as a meteorite.Ifโ confirmed, Perseverance will โbe able to study the composition and structure of this extraterrestrial material, providing valuable insights intoโ the early solarโ system and the โpotential for delivering organic molecules to Mars.
