Ironsideโข Operation Nets Dozens in South Australia’s Largest Organized Crime Arrests
Adelaide, โSouth Australia โ – โฃIn what authoritiesโ are calling the largest single-day โขcrackdown onโ organized crime โคin South Australia’sโฃ history, approximately 40 arrests wereโ made across the state on June 7, 2021, as part of the wider, three-year Operation Ironside. The nationwide sting resulted in the simultaneous arrests of hundreds of alleged criminals across 18 countries.
Theโฃ operationโข involved aroundโค 460 officers searching 80 premises, culminating in a meaningful blow to criminalโ networks operating withinโข South Australia. Prior to this major sweep, 33 arrests had already been made in connection with Operation Ironside. nationally, the operation had,at that time, led toโค 224 offenders facing 525 โขcharges, according to the Australianโ Federal Police (AFP).
Operationโ Ironside centered on the use โof AN0M, an encrypted โคappโฃ secretly developed by the AFP and distributed among criminal groups through โindividuals police identified as “criminal โinfluencers.”โข The appโ allowed authorities to monitor real-time โcommunications, capturing approximatelyโฃ 28 million messagesโฃ globally,โ including 19 million originating from Australia. A complex system copied messages as they were sent, collecting themโ onโฃ a separate server before โre-transmitting them to a secure โserverโค in Sydney accessible to โlaw โenforcement.
Recent guilty pleas and prosecutions have โbeen bolsteredโ byโ a High โCourt ruling earlier thisโฃ month, endorsingโค theโ legality of using data obtained through the AN0M app in criminal proceedings. The ruling paves the way for continuedโค prosecutions stemming from the operation.
