BERLIN, CT (WFSB) – A man endangered highway workers when he collided with a state Department of Transportation vehicle on Route 9 in Berlin, troopers said.
State police said 46-year-old Brian Ayers of West Hartford was drunk at the time.
It happened on Thursday around 9:15 p.m. Troopers were assigned to help at a construction project on Route 9 north near exit 34. They said a CT DOT supervisor’s vehicle was rear-ended by a driver in the construction pattern.
“The left lane of Route 9 northbound and the exit 34 off ramp were closed for this project, and a vehicle traveling north in the right lane had veered left inside the construction pattern and collided with the rear end of a parked DOT vehicle which had actively displayed emergency safety lighting,” state police said in their report.
Several troopers responded. The DOT supervisor reported minor pain from the collision but refused a ride to a hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, whom troopers identified as Ayers, was not hurt.
“Ayers was exhibiting clear signs of impairment on scene, to include the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person, an open alcoholic container within the vehicle, and that he was extremely unsteady on his feet,” troopers said. Ayers failed standardized field sobriety testing.
He was arrested and charged with endangering highway workers, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs in a construction zone, failure to maintain a proper lane in a construction zone, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Understanding Highway Safety and DUI Laws
Construction zones present unique hazards for both workers and drivers. Reduced speed limits, shifting lanes, and the presence of workers and equipment require heightened awareness. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs considerably impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination, making it extremely dangerous to operate any vehicle, especially in a construction area. DUI laws are strict, and penalties can be severe, including hefty fines, license suspension, and jail time. Awareness and adherence to these laws are crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.

Officials have identified a 70-year-old man who died from a fireworks incident on the Fourth of July, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruzโs office.
The incident occurred at around 9:19 p.m. when police received a 911 call for a report of a person hit by a firework at 34 Beach St. in Wareham.
Wareham police, fire and emergency medical services found 70-year-old Robert Spagnuolo, of Wareham, with an apparent facial injury from a firework, the district attorneyโs statement reads. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After interviewing several witnesses, investigators determined that Spagnuolo was setting off fireworks at the beach when one exploded in his face, causing traumatic injuries.
The incident happened during an Independence Day party and nobody else was hurt, WCVB reported.
Massachusetts State Police did not immediately respond to questions about the incident.
Massachusetts State Police, Wareham Police and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal are investigating the matter, the district attorney wrote on X.
Fireworks in Massachusetts are illegal without licensing and certification. State law mandates that police seize any illegal fireworks they find โ even those that were purchased lawfully in another state and then taken to Massachusetts. People who use or possess fireworks illegally can be fined, while those who sell illegal fireworks can be sentenced to jail.
Illegal fireworks have caused more than 200 serious injuries, more than 500 fires and explosions and nearly $1 million in damages in Massachusetts alone over the past five years, the fire marshalโs office said in a press release.

Two arrests in Vienna, they wanted to attack Taylor Swift’s show. Concerts canceled – News – Ansa.it
Two arrests and a possible tragic murder escaped. In Vienna the local authorities stopped a sensational terrorist plan in its tracks: to attack the concerts of the most famous singer in the world, Taylor Swift. Their three concerts in the Austrian capital this evening were canceled as a precaution by the organizers. The American star, who was on tour in Europe a few weeks ago, was supposed to play at the Ernst-Happel stadium in the Austrian capital on August 8, 9 and 10.
Three dates, not one, were scheduled to allow tens of thousands of fans to attend the concerts. But the party could have turned into a terrible murder. The two who were stopped by the police within a few hours planned to attack one of the three nights in which the show is scheduled. The first arrest was made in the morning, in a small town an hour away from Vienna, Ternitz. The terrorist suspect is a nineteen-year resident of Lower Austria, and his identity has not been released but it has been revealed that he has pledged allegiance to ISIS. The Director General of Public Security at the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, Franz Ruf, explained in a press conference that the investigations had found “preparatory activities” for an attack by the 19-year-old.
With a blitz the police appeared at his house, evacuating several nearby houses and closing the streets. the police then arrested the young man and found and seized suspicious “chemical substances”. According to the investigation, the man had become radicalized on the Internet. The second suspect was arrested this afternoon in Vienna and according to local media he is 17 years old although the authorities did not provide further information. According to some Austrian newspapers – but local authorities have not confirmed the news – three other suspected attackers are on the run, who are also involved in planning an attack on a stadium Ernst-Happel. The head of the Austrian Police, Gerhard Pรผrstl, explained that a serious risk had been avoided, but that security measures for the three Taylor Swift concerts and other events scheduled for the weekend in Vienna had been strengthened. Then it was announced that all three dates were cancelled. “When we received confirmation from government officials about the plan for a terrorist attack at the Ernst Happel stadium, we had no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety,” wrote Barracuda Music on Instagram, adding those fans – estimated to be at least 65 thousand – will have their tickets refunded.

The dead man was noticed on the road by a resident of Tฤซnลซลพu parish who was driving home along the Inฤukalns-Ropaลพi-Ikลกkile highway.
The driver’s attention was distracted by a bag flapping on the asphalt. After a moment, the man saw that there was a dead person on the road.
The police officers held talks with the drivers of the involved cars for quite some time. The people around say that the circumstances of the accident are quite confusing, as there is a possibility that the pedestrian ran on the road on purpose, reports the program.
“The only thing we know is that the guy was wearing a white T-shirt and was 34 years old. It is said that he ran over a car, but the driver managed to avoid it, while the next car did not. It sounds like a suicide,” says a local resident.

The act of vandalism, probably carried out with a pickaxe, occurred around 3.20 in the morning. The owner of the petrol pump, who will file a complaint in the next few days, discovered the serious damage and the theft of the money contained inside the house. The police are also on site.
The cameras that have been installed near the petrol station will certainly help in the investigation, but the damage is more serious than the theft of money committed: the automatic cash machine has an estimated value of around 10 thousand euros and was completely destroyed.
It is not the first time that Q8 in via Moroni has been visited by criminals: last November 15th unknown persons managed to enter the offices, stealing bags, money and personal effects. A skillful theft, which occurred while the owners were also present at the petrol pump, who were distracted and robbed.
