Stanford Wrestling โClaims historic Midlands Title, Eyes Continued Success
EVANSTON, IL โฃ- The Stanford Cardinal wrestling โคteam made history in December 2024, capturing theโข Ken Kraft midlands Championships team title for the โฃfirst time in program history. Theโข Cardinal’sโฃ extraordinary performance, highlighted by individual championships from Tyler Knox (133 โpounds), Jaden abas (149 pounds), and Lorenzo Norman (174 pounds), marks a new high forโข the program under Head Coach Chris โฃAyres. Knox was named the Dan Gable Most Outstanding wrestler, and Norman โearned โthe Jack Leese Champion of Champions award.
Theโค 2024-25 season began with strong individual showingsโข at the NWCA All-Star Classic on November โข1 at Rutgers.Hunter โคGarvin defeatedโ Lehigh’s Max Brignola, 4-1, at 165 pounds. While Cardenas fellโ inโค sudden victory,โ 7-2, too West โVirginia’s Ty Watters at 157 โpounds.
Stanford’s recent success buildsโข onโ a strong 2023-24 campaign, which saw the Cardinal finishโค in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships and produce two All-Americans. The team finishedโค with a 10-5 overallโข record and aโฃ 2-4 markโค in ACC duals, despite not fielding โa wrestler at โ125 pounds. Stanford placed fifth at the ACC โคChampionships in Durham, North Carolina, with Garvin (165) andโค Nick Stemmetโค (197) earning All-ACC honors. Garvin became โthe first Stanford wrestler to win โan individual ACC title, claiming the 165-pound โขcrown.
At theโ 2024 NCAAโฃ Championships in Philadelphia, Stanford qualifiedโ eight wrestlers โand finished 18th as aโข team, securing multiple All-American honors forโค the second โขconsecutive season. This marked the fifth time in six years Stanford has had multiple All-Americansโ and the 11th time overall in program history.
Hunter Garvin reached โthe quarterfinals andโ placed sixth at 165 pounds, becoming aโข two-time NCAA All-American. Tyler Knox, seeded 13th, finished eighthโฃ at 133 pounds, becoming the fourth freshman NCAA All-American in school history, joiningโค Joey McKenna (2016), Jaden Abas (2021), and Garvin (2024). Knox is the 27th individual All-American for โStanford, contributing to โฃthe program’s 39 All-America โhonors overall.
Chris Ayres is in his third season as the Mattโฃ Gentry Head โWrestling Coach at Stanford and his 20th season as a collegiate head coach. Prior to Stanford, Ayres spent 17 โseasonsโฃ as the head coach at Princeton, earning โfour Ivy League Coach of theโค year awards.
