Stanford Wrestling ‌Claims historic Midlands Title, Eyes Continued Success

EVANSTON, IL ⁣- The Stanford Cardinal wrestling ⁤team made history in December 2024, capturing the⁢ Ken Kraft midlands Championships team title for the ⁣first time in program history. The⁢ Cardinal’s⁣ extraordinary performance, highlighted by individual championships from Tyler Knox (133 ​pounds), Jaden abas (149 pounds), and Lorenzo Norman (174 pounds), marks a new high for⁢ the program under Head Coach Chris ⁣Ayres. Knox was named the Dan Gable Most Outstanding wrestler, and Norman ​earned ‌the Jack Leese Champion of Champions award.

The⁤ 2024-25 season began with strong individual showings⁢ at the NWCA All-Star Classic on November ⁢1 at Rutgers.Hunter ⁤Garvin defeated​ Lehigh’s Max Brignola, 4-1, at 165 pounds. While Cardenas fell​ in⁤ sudden victory,‍ 7-2, too West ‌Virginia’s Ty Watters at 157 ​pounds.

Stanford’s recent success builds⁢ on‍ a strong 2023-24 campaign, which saw the Cardinal finish⁤ in the top 20 at the NCAA Championships and produce two All-Americans. The team finished⁤ with a 10-5 overall⁢ record and a⁣ 2-4 mark⁤ in ACC duals, despite not fielding ‌a wrestler at ​125 pounds. Stanford placed fifth at the ACC ⁤Championships in Durham, North Carolina, with Garvin (165) and⁤ Nick Stemmet⁤ (197) earning All-ACC honors. Garvin became ​the first Stanford wrestler to win ​an individual ACC title, claiming the 165-pound ⁢crown.

At the‌ 2024 NCAA⁣ Championships in Philadelphia, Stanford qualified​ eight wrestlers ​and finished 18th as a⁢ team, securing multiple All-American honors for⁤ the second ⁢consecutive season. This marked the fifth time in six years Stanford has had multiple All-Americans‍ and the 11th time overall in program history.

Hunter Garvin reached ‍the quarterfinals and‍ placed sixth at 165 pounds, becoming a⁢ two-time NCAA All-American. Tyler Knox, seeded 13th, finished eighth⁣ at 133 pounds, becoming the fourth freshman NCAA All-American in school history, joining⁤ Joey McKenna (2016), Jaden Abas (2021), and Garvin (2024). Knox is the 27th individual All-American for ‍Stanford, contributing to ⁣the program’s 39 All-America ​honors overall.

Chris Ayres is in his third season as the Matt⁣ Gentry Head ​Wrestling Coach at Stanford and his 20th season as a collegiate head coach. Prior to Stanford, Ayres spent 17 ‌seasons⁣ as the head coach at Princeton, earning ​four Ivy League Coach of the⁤ year awards.

Stanford ‍Cardinal Dominate SMU Invite, Secure Top Spot

DALLAS, TX ‍- The Stanford⁢ Cardinal men’s swimming and diving team finished atop the leaderboard at the SMU Invite this weekend,⁣ showcasing ‌impressive performances and securing​ multiple NCAA qualifying times. The three-day meet,concluding Saturday,saw a flurry of personal bests,season-leading times,and entries into the stanford‌ record books.

Freshman Ben ekk made an⁤ immediate impact,posting the ⁤fourth-fastest⁣ time in the⁤ NCAA this season in the ⁢200​ fly with a 1:45.68, also the best in the ⁣ACC. He followed up with a 3:42.01 in the 400 IM, the second-fastest time nationally and the seventh-best in Stanford history.

Leon Fan also delivered a standout‍ performance, winning the 100 breaststroke ⁣in 51.28 – the second-fastest⁤ time in the NCAA this season and⁢ tying his own personal record, ​which ranks second ⁣all-time at Stanford.

The Cardinal also excelled in freestyle events. Andrew McFadden won the 200 free with a ⁣time of 1:33.33,while Jonathan Gu secured a personal best and victory in the 50 free,clocking in at ​19.13. Gu also contributed to multiple relay wins.

Stanford swept all ‍four relays throughout the competition. They opened with a 1:16.31 in the 200 free relay (harrington, Tan, Dupont Cabrera, and Gu), an NCAA qualifying standard. they continued their⁢ success with ⁣a 3:03.89 in the⁤ 400 medley relay (Harland, Fan, Gu, and⁣ Dupont Cabrera) and concluded with a 2:48.01 in the 400 free relay (Dupont‌ Cabrera,Harrington,Tan,and Gu).

Friday saw Daniel ⁤Li win the 200 breaststroke in 1:51.88, and Ekk achieve the second-best⁤ time ⁢in Stanford history in the 500 free with a 4:11.10, narrowly missing Grant Shoults’ 2018 record by just over a ⁤second.

Saturday’s competition featured three more individual wins. Omer Wiener claimed his first collegiate victory in the 200 IM with a time⁢ of 1:43.79, qualifying for the ⁤NCAA Championships. Dupont Cabrera won the 100 free in 42.24, and McFadden secured his ​second win of​ the meet in the 200 fly⁣ with a time of 1:42.77. Josh Zuchowski won the 200 ⁣backstroke in 1:40.98, also earning an NCAA qualifying time ‍despite finishing second overall.

Stanford ⁣will resume team competition​ in January, with dual meets scheduled ⁣against UC San Diego on January 16 and USC on January 17.

STANFORD, Calif. – the ‌No.1 Stanford Cardinal⁤ women’s soccer team secured a 3-2 victory over Virginia on Thursday,advancing to the championship final. Stanford’s dominant first-half performance, punctuated ⁤by⁤ a spectacular goal from senior Jasmine Aikey with just four seconds remaining, ⁤propelled them‍ to the win.

Stanford quickly took control, with Charlotte Kohler scoring ‌her ninth ⁢and tenth goals of the season ‌in the 17th⁣ and 28th minutes, ⁤respectively, to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead. Aikey then extended the advantage to ‍3-0 before halftime with‌ her team-leading 14th goal of the season ⁣- a 40-yard shot.

Virginia responded in the second half, outshooting Stanford 15-5 and narrowing the gap with goals from meredith McDermott in the⁢ 58th minute and maggie Cagle on a ‌penalty kick in the 85th ⁢minute.

Despite ​the Cavaliers’ second-half push, Stanford goalkeeper Caroline birkel, the 2025 ACC Goalkeeper of the Year, delivered a career-high six saves – four in the second half – to preserve the victory.
