Katharina Schmid, Germany’s flagbearer, experienced a heartbreaking end to her Olympic career with a crash during the women’s ski jumping competition at the Predazzo Olympic venue on Sunday evening. The 29-year-old, who announced her planned retirement at the end of the current season, finished 42nd after landing at 96.5 meters, failing to qualify for the second round. The competition was won by Norway’s Anna Odine Stroem, securing her first Olympic gold medal, following her victory on the Normal Hill. Her compatriot, Eirin Maria Kvandal, took silver, and Nika Prevc of Slovenia claimed the bronze. Schmid’s disappointing performance came despite her honor of carrying the German flag at the opening ceremony. “If you don’t have the form, then you also get this ugly headwind. I feel incredibly sorry for her,” said ski jumping legend Sven Hannawald in a livestream broadcast by ARD, a German public broadcaster. “What can you do? On the one hand, so many positive feelings and emotions with the honor of being the flagbearer, and then this…” The challenging wind conditions were a significant factor for several competitors. Hannawald noted a 3.5-meter-per-second tailwind during Schmid’s jump, which he suggested made a fine performance nearly impossible. Following her crash, Schmid attempted to maintain composure, acknowledging the crowd with a bow before visibly breaking down in tears. “It hurts so much, I didn’t want it to end like this,” she said, her voice choked with emotion. “I would have liked to have shown at least one more jump. You always wish for things to be different. Whether better conditions would have helped – I don’t realize. I just want to go home now, to my family. Thank God everyone is here.” Agnes Reisch finished tenth and Selina Freitag placed seventeenth, both hampered by unfavorable wind conditions during their first jumps. Juliane Seyfarth, competing in her first Olympic Games on the large hill, also struggled, falling on her second jump after a promising initial effort of 119 meters, ultimately finishing 23rd. The Olympic Games continue in Italy, with further ski jumping events scheduled throughout the week.

HSV’s Casper U. Mortensen to Leave in Summer – Return to Denmark Confirmed
written by Emma Walker – News Editor
Casper U. Mortensen, the German Handball Bundesliga’s leading scorer in the 2022/23 season, will leave HSV Hamburg at the end of the current campaign, returning to Denmark with his family. The club confirmed the departure of the 36-year-old left winger, ending a tenure that began with a return to Hamburg in 2021.
Mortensen previously played for HSV Handball in 2015, but his time with the club was cut short when HSV filed for insolvency in 2016. He subsequently moved to Hannover, then spent several seasons with FC Barcelona, winning championships, national cups, and the EHF Champions League. Despite his success in Spain, Mortensen expressed a desire to return to the Bundesliga and specifically to Hamburg. “Hamburg was always my dream city, the Bundesliga my dream league,” he stated ahead of Sunday’s North Derby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
In the 2022/23 season, Mortensen scored 234 goals in 32 games, earning him the title of Bundesliga top scorer for the second time in his career, having previously achieved the honor in the 2017/18 season. He currently has 83 goals this season, maintaining a 74 percent shooting accuracy.
The primary reason for Mortensen’s departure is family-related. His wife, Stine, is a sports journalist for Danish broadcaster TV2, and the family wishes to live closer to their homeland. “Our son Carlo was born during this time abroad, and now is the right time to be closer to our family in Denmark,” Mortensen explained. The decision was not made impulsively, according to reports.
HSV Hamburg’s Sporting Director, Johannes Bitter, who played alongside Mortensen in 2015, described him as “a characterful type who always tried to make everyone around him better.”
Currently, Kay Geenen (22) is the only left winger under contract for the upcoming season. HSV Hamburg is actively searching for a replacement for Mortensen, with the club aiming to finalize a novel signing in the near future.
