SpaceX Crew‑11 Early Splashdown: Live Stream & How to Watch

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor January 20, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

SpaceX’s Crew-11 mission has taken an unexpected turn, prompting an early return to Earth for the four astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Originally slated to remain in orbit until February, the crew is now scheduled to splash down in the early hours of Thursday due to a medical issue affecting one of its members.

This decision, made by NASA chief Jared Isaacman, prioritizes the astronaut’s health and necessitates a shortened mission duration. While NASA is maintaining the privacy of the individual and the specifics of the condition, they have confirmed the astronaut is currently stable. The crew departed the ISS on Wednesday afternoon and is preparing for reentry.

Crew-11 and the Unexpected Turn

Crew-11 consists of four international astronauts: Michael Fincke and zena Cardman from the United States, Kimiya Yui from Japan, and Oleg Platonov from Russia. They arrived at the ISS in August of the previous year and had been actively participating in scientific research and station maintenance. Just days before the decision to return, the crew participated in a change-of-command ceremony, signaling their continued commitment to the mission – a testament to the sudden nature of this change. The crew’s early departure highlights the inherent risks and complexities of long-duration spaceflight, where unforeseen medical events can necessitate rapid adjustments to mission plans.

How to Watch the Return

NASA will provide live coverage of the final 90 minutes of Crew-11’s journey home, offering a glimpse into the dramatic reentry and splashdown. The livestream will begin at 2:15 a.m. ET on Thursday and can be viewed on several platforms:

  • NASA+
  • NASA’s YouTube Channel

The broadcast will showcase the Crew Dragon capsule’s descent through the Earth’s atmosphere, providing real-time updates and live interaction between the crew and Mission Control. Splashdown is currently targeted for 3:41 a.m. ET off the coast of California. Following a successful splashdown, the crew will undergo thorough medical evaluations on land, with particular attention given to the astronaut experiencing the medical condition.

ISS Crew status and Future Missions

With Crew-11’s early departure, the ISS is temporarily operating with a reduced crew of three: one NASA astronaut and two Roscosmos cosmonauts. This smaller team will continue essential research and maintenance operations until the arrival of SpaceX’s Crew-12 mission, anticipated in mid-February. Crew-12’s arrival will restore the ISS crew to its typical complement of seven, ensuring the continuation of vital scientific endeavors in low Earth orbit. The ISS program relies on a continuous rotation of crews to maximize research output and maintain the station’s operational capabilities.

This situation underscores the importance of robust medical protocols and contingency planning for all space missions.NASA and its international partners are constantly refining these procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of astronauts during long-duration spaceflight. The swift decision to bring Crew-11 home demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing crew health, even if it means adjusting mission objectives.
