Tennis – Djokovic happy to return to Australia – Sport

Adelaide (AP) – Tennis star Novak Djokovic is happy about his return to Australia. “It’s great to be back in Australia,” said the Serb in Adelaide, where he will play the ATP tournament starting on New Year’s Day and prepare for the Australian Open in Melbourne.

“It’s a country where I’ve had tremendous success in my career, particularly in Melbourne,” added the 35-year-old. “I hope everything is positive.” He will “do his best to play good tennis and give the crowd good emotions and good feelings,” said the 21-time Grand Slam winner.

Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times. Last January he had to leave the country before the start of the tournament due to his lack of vaccination against the corona virus. His visa had previously been canceled and a three-year entry ban imposed. The entry ban has now been lifted by the Australian authorities.

“Of course, what happened twelve months ago wasn’t easy for me, for my family, my team and everyone close to me. Obviously it’s disappointing to leave the country like this,” Djokovic said. “You can’t forget these events. It’s one of those things that will stay with you for the rest of your life. I’ve never experienced anything like it and I hope I never will again. But it’s a valuable life experience for me and something will remain. But I have to go on.”

Weather – Cologne:A small flood floods the banks of the Rhine

December 27, 2022 8:07

Directly from the dpa news channel

Cologne (dpa/lnw) – The small flood wave that inundated parts of the Rhine promenade in Cologne is expected to reach its maximum level on Tuesday. The water levels remain far below the values at which there would be danger for inhabited centers or restrictions on navigation. Early Tuesday morning, the Cologne Waterways and Shipping Administration reported a water level of 5.30 meters, which is almost a meter below high water level I, where the first restrictions apply to navigation.

In the course of the afternoon a further drop in the water level is expected in Cologne and Düsseldorf. On the Lower Rhine near Emmerich, experts expected a further drop in values on Wednesday.

In recent days, heavy rainfall has caused the water level in rivers to rise. But it wasn’t dangerous. In August, there was still a historic low tide in the Rhine due to the persistent drought.

Christine Berndt

China is once again on the dark side of the pandemic. The number of infections has exploded since Beijing suddenly abandoned its zero-Covid strategy. Hospitals are overcrowded, medicines are scarce and funeral homes are no longer able to cope with the many corpses. According to estimates by British scientists, there are already one million new infections every day in China, as the new wave is only just beginning; more than 5,000 people may die every day.

Church – Freiburg im Breisgau – Archbishop Burger: Do not lose courage despite the – political crisis

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 25, 2022
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Freiburg (dpa/lsw) – Catholic Archbishop Stephan Burger has urged people not to lose heart despite the current crisis. According to the manuscript of the speech, Burger said in his Sunday Christmas Day sermon that there is a central message of hope in the Christmas story. The “mystery of innocent love that only a newborn human child gives us” is the moment in which we can experience firsthand what it means to be a child of God, he said on Christmas day.

Burger went on to say that this insight offers a chance to reshape life. Brought into this love, it becomes possible to leave distrust and suspicion behind, put disturbing and painful experiences on the back burner. “It becomes possible to forgive those who owe us forgiveness. It becomes possible to ask for forgiveness from others.”

The Evangelical bishop of Württemberg, Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl, has invited the powerful of this world to reconsider their role. According to the manuscript of the speech previously distributed in the Stuttgart collegiate church, Gohl said: “Because then, as now, the powerful appear to us as those who own tanks or have assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars – or both.” Colossians does not require reversal. Simply classify the mighty downstairs. “Why? Because even rulers who seemingly carry out their acts of violence without hindrance will one day die. And the same goes for billionaires as it goes for all of us: the last shirt has no pockets.”
