Jack โWhite Sells Catalog Stakeโ to Sony Music Group in โMulti-Million Dollar Deal
DETROIT – Jackโ White has entered into a deal with Sony Music Group to acquire aโค notable stake โคin his music catalog, โขencompassing recordings from his work โขwith The โขWhite Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and his soloโฃ career. Financialโฃ terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but sources indicate the deal is valued in the tens of millionsโฃ of dollars.
the โขacquisition includes master recordings of six Whiteโ Stripes albums, โคincluding the critically acclaimed โ White Blood Cells and Elephant, which collectivelyโ earned the band sixโ Grammy Awards between 2004 and 2011. Hitsโ like “We’re Going to Be Friends,” “Fell in Love With a Girl,” and the globally recognized “Seven Nation Army,” which achieved double-platinum status, are included โคin the catalog.
Beyond The white โฃStripes, the deal encompasses White’s work with The Raconteurs, whose albums Consolers of the Lonely and Broken Boy Soldiers both receivedโค grammyโฃ nominations โคfor best rockโ album, and The Dead Weather, all three of whose albumsโ debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard chart. Itโ also includes his six solo โalbums, the most recent beingโค No Name, released last year as a surprise โfree release at his Third โคMan records stores before wider distribution, and which earned a Grammy nomination for best โขrockโฃ album. This move by Sony continues a trend of acquiring catalogs from prominent artists. In 2021, the company purchased Bruce Springsteen’sโ recordings and publishing catalogs for approximately $500 million, followed in 2022 by the acquisition of Bob Dylan’s recorded catalog. โคEarlier this year, Sony Music Publishing acquired Hipgnosis Songs Group. The news arrives shortly โafter White publicly criticized former Presidentโ Donald Trump in August, responding toโค a Trump official’s dismissive commentsโ following White’s critique of the Oval Office redesign. In a lengthy Instagram post, white described โTrump as “a danger to not just America but theโ whole world,” asserting, “I’m a human being raised inโฃ Detroitโฆan artist who’s โฃowned his own businessesโฆwho has enough street sense to know when a 3 card monte dealer is a โฃcheap grifter โand a thief.”
