Snoop Dogg Denies Instagram Comments Following Criticism of LGBTQ+ representation in ‘Lightyear‘
Los Angeles, CA - August 31, 2024 – Snoop Dogg is clarifying remarks attributed to him regarding LGBTQ+ representation in Disney/PixarS Lightyear, after a clip from a recent YouTube interview resurfaced sparking online debate. The rapper initially discussed a conversation with his grandson about a same-sex couple depicted in the film, expressing discomfort with the topic being presented to children. Now,a representative for Snoop Dogg asserts that comments posted on Instagram purportedly responding to the criticism are “fake.”
The controversy began when a clip from an interview circulated showing Snoop Dogg recounting his grandson’s confusion over a female couple having a baby in Lightyear. “Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!'” Snoop said in the interview. He described feeling unprepared to answer his grandson’s questions, stating, “I’m like, scared to go to the movies now. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.” Lightyear, released in 2022, featured a relationship between Buzz Lightyear’s friend Alisha Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her wife, Kiko, including an onscreen kiss.
Following the resurfaced clip, screenwriter Lauren Gunderson, who contributed to the film, defended the inclusion of the queer couple on Instagram, stating, “I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen.I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters as beautiful love like this exists.” Gunderson emphasized that the relationship was not fictional, contrasting it with other elements of the film’s plot.
Though, a statement released by Snoop Dogg’s representative on Sunday, August 31, disputes the authenticity of responses posted on Gunderson’s Instagram page attributed to the rapper. The clarification comes as the initial interview clip continues to generate discussion about representation in children’s media and the role of parents in navigating these conversations with thier children.
