Title: Meta to let parents disable teens’ AI chats

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor October 17, 2025
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Meta Platforms Inc. is introducing ‍new parental controls designed to give parents more oversight of their teenagers’ activity on its apps, including Instagram and Facebook, following mounting criticism over potentially harmful interactions with the company’s AI chatbots. The changes, announced Tuesday, will allow parents to approve or deny⁣ their teens’ ⁣requests⁣ to download apps and will provide activity reports detailing time spent ⁣on the platforms.

The move comes amid growing concerns⁢ about the safety‌ of young users⁢ online⁤ and specifically follows reports of Meta’s AI chatbots engaging in suggestive or inappropriate conversations with children.Lawmakers and advocacy groups have pressured Meta to strengthen its ⁤safeguards, arguing that the company has a ⁣responsibility to protect ⁣vulnerable users from exploitation and harmful content. The new controls aim to address these concerns by increasing transparency and giving parents more ‌tools to manage their children’s digital experiences.

Specifically, Meta is rolling out “Family Switch,”⁤ a new tool within its Family Center⁤ that allows parents and teens to jointly manage settings. Parents can approve or deny requests ⁢from their teens to download⁣ apps from the app stores, and teens can initiate those requests.⁤ Meta is also ⁢introducing activity reports for teens,‍ showing time spent on Instagram and ⁤Facebook, ⁢and also the accounts they interact with. These reports will be visible to both parents‌ and teens.

The company is also expanding its supervision tools to include Reels, a popular short-form video format⁢ on Instagram. previously, parental⁤ supervision was ⁢limited to direct messaging. ⁣Parents will now be able‌ to see ⁣what Reels their teens are watching.

These features ⁣are being rolled ‌out in the United states, with plans for expansion to other ‌countries in the coming months.Meta stated the changes are part of its ongoing commitment to creating a safer online‍ environment for young people, acknowledging the evolving challenges of⁣ digital parenting.⁢ The company has faced increased scrutiny from regulators⁢ and the public regarding its handling of user safety, especially concerning children and adolescents.

Title: Bitcoin, Ether Face Volatility as Investors Seek Protection

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 14, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Following a historic crypto market collapse in 2022, investors⁣ are rapidly seeking ways to protect themselves from another potential freefall, driving demand for options contracts adn other hedging instruments. Trading volume for Bitcoin options surged to a six-month high ⁣this week, according to data from Deribit, the largest digital asset options exchange, signaling a‍ growing anxiety among crypto holders. The dramatic downturn last year – which saw Bitcoin lose nearly 75% of its value and the collapse of major ⁤players like FTX – left many reeling and sparked ⁣renewed interest in risk management. Now, with Bitcoin rebounding and nearing $30,000, investors are bracing for potential volatility, fearing a repeat of 2022’s‌ devastating losses. This hedging activity impacts ‍not only individual investors but also institutional players increasingly⁢ involved in ⁣the digital asset space, and could influence⁣ the overall stability of the crypto⁣ market.

Deribit reported a⁣ daily trading volume of over 15,000 Bitcoin options contracts on Tuesday, the highest as November. Put options, which profit from price declines, are particularly popular, with⁢ traders buying them as insurance against further downturns. “There’s a lot of fear still in the market,” said Luuk⁣ Strijers, Deribit’s chief commercial ‌officer. “People are still scarred from ‌last year.”

The increased hedging activity extends beyond options. Demand for short Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is‍ also rising in anticipation ‌of potential price drops, though these ⁤are‍ not yet available in the U.S. Meanwhile, traditional financial institutions are offering crypto-linked structured products with embedded downside protection.

Analysts attribute the renewed caution to several factors, including macroeconomic uncertainty, regulatory⁣ scrutiny, and lingering concerns‍ about the stability of certain crypto projects. ‍ The recent banking turmoil in the ⁤U.S. also contributed to the risk-off sentiment, prompting‌ some investors ‌to seek safe havens.”The market is‌ still very sensitive to negative news,” said Marcus⁣ Sotiriou, a market analyst at digital asset broker GlobalBlock. “Any sign of regulatory crackdown or a major project failing ‍could ‌trigger another sell-off.” He noted that the current rally may be vulnerable to a correction if macroeconomic conditions worsen.

Trump’s trade war with China in 2025

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 14, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

WASHINGTON, Oct 26 – Escalating tensions over trade imbalances and technological ⁢competition, former President Donald Trump has announced the⁢ reimposition of significant tariffs on Chinese goods, triggering a renewed trade war between the world’s two largest economies. ‍The move, effective November 1st, will see ⁣tariffs ‍increased to ⁣60% on over $300 billion worth of Chinese imports, mirroring and exceeding the ⁤levels seen during Trump’s initial trade conflict beginning ‍in 2018.

The resurgence of trade⁢ hostilities arrives as both nations grapple with‍ slowing economic growth and ⁢domestic political pressures. The tariffs⁢ are expected⁣ to impact a wide range ⁢of consumer goods, from electronics and apparel to industrial machinery, perhaps fueling inflation in the United States and disrupting global supply chains. Beijing has already signaled its intent to retaliate with reciprocal tariffs on U.S. exports, raising the specter of a prolonged⁤ and‌ damaging trade standoff. This escalation marks a significant⁢ shift from the Biden governance’s ⁢earlier attempts ⁢to ‍engage in dialog with⁤ China and address trade concerns through negotiation.

The ⁣renewed trade war stems⁣ from Trump’s ⁢repeated‌ claims‍ that China engages in unfair trade practices, including currency manipulation,‍ intellectual property theft, and state subsidies for its‍ industries. During a ‌rally ‌in Iowa on⁣ Friday, ‍Trump stated, “china has been ripping us off for years, and it’s time to put America first again. ⁣we’re ⁤going to bring jobs back home and make America wealthy.” He specifically‍ cited a $323.3 billion trade deficit with china in 2023 as evidence of the imbalance.

Economists are divided on the ⁤potential consequences. ⁣ A recent analysis by ‍the Peterson Institute for ⁤International Economics⁣ estimates the tariffs could reduce U.S. GDP by 1% and lead to the loss ⁣of 700,000 American jobs. Conversely, some Trump supporters argue the tariffs will incentivize domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains. ⁢

The initial trade war under Trump, which began in 2018, ⁢saw tariffs imposed on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods from⁣ both ‌countries. While ⁣a “Phase One” trade deal was⁣ signed in January 2020, it did little to‍ resolve the underlying ‌issues, and‍ many tariffs remained in place. The current escalation builds on that unresolved ‍friction.

China’s Ministry of Commerce issued a statement condemning the tariffs as “unilateral and protectionist” ⁤and vowed to “firmly defend its legitimate ‍rights and interests.” The statement further warned that China is prepared to take “necessary measures” to ‌counter the⁣ U.S. actions.‌ Analysts ‍predict these measures will likely⁤ include⁤ tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, ⁣energy resources,⁢ and aircraft.

The impact will⁣ be felt globally.⁣ European and Asian markets reacted negatively to the news, with⁢ stock indices falling sharply. The International monetary fund has warned that a full-blown trade war could derail the global economic recovery. ‌The‌ situation remains fluid, with both sides signaling a willingness to escalate further if their demands are not met.

Kyiv Hit by Russian Drone and Missile Attack: Apartments, Power Sites Damaged

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 10, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Kyiv ‍residents scrambled for shelter early Thursday as Russia launched a major wave of attacks targeting apartment buildings adn critical energy infrastructure across Ukraine, officials said. At least one person ⁤was killed in Kyiv and dozens injured, as explosions rocked the capital and other cities, plunging areas into darkness.

The strikes represent a important escalation in the‌ conflict, coming as⁣ Ukraine’s allies debate further aid packages and as the war ⁢enters a critical phase.‍ The attacks ⁣deliberately targeted civilian areas, aiming to cripple Ukraine’s energy grid ahead of winter ⁣and ⁤sow panic among the population, ‍Ukrainian officials stated. The assault underscores Russia’s continued reliance on a strategy of attrition and its willingness to⁢ inflict widespread damage despite international condemnation.

Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepted many ⁣of the incoming ⁤missiles‌ and drones, but some got through, causing widespread damage.‍ In ‍Kyiv, debris from‌ a downed missile⁤ struck a residential building in the Solomianskyi district, killing one and injuring at least 18, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Several other districts also reported explosions and damage.

“This is⁣ a purposeful terror attack by Russia,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a televised address. “They are trying to break us, to demoralize us, but we⁢ will not yield.”

Energy facilities in ⁢several regions, including Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and ⁤Odesa, were⁤ hit, causing power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people. ⁤Ukraine’s energy ‍grid operator, Ukrenergo, warned of potential⁤ rolling blackouts throughout the day as it worked to restore power.

The attacks utilized⁢ a combination of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, ‌and Shahed⁢ drones, officials⁤ said. Air raid alerts sounded across the country for several hours, with residents urged to seek shelter.

This is not⁤ the first⁤ time Russia has targeted ‌Ukraine’s energy ‍infrastructure. Last winter, similar attacks left millions‌ without heat and electricity ‌for extended periods. The latest ‌strikes ‌suggest Russia is preparing to repeat this strategy as temperatures drop.

The united States and other Western allies have‍ condemned the attacks and pledged continued support for Ukraine. However, the provision of further aid ⁣is facing ‌political hurdles in some countries, raising concerns ⁢about ‌Ukraine’s ability to sustain⁢ its defense.
