WASHINGTON (October 26, 2023) – Former FBIโค Director James Comey has beenโข indicted on โคtwo charges related to theโค handling โฃof confidential โFBI facts, the Justiceโ Department announcedโฃ today. The charges โคstem from Comey’s actions following his dismissal from the FBI inโข 2017.
The indictment alleges โthat Comey improperlyโฃ disclosed unclassified โคmemos โขdetailing conversations with then-President โDonald Trump to a private individual with the intention of prompting a media โleak. This occurred after Comey was fired amidst the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The case resurfaces long-standing scrutinyโข of the Trump-Russia probe and raises questions about the handling ofโ sensitive government information by high-ranking officials.
According to the Justiceโค department, the chargesโฃ relateโ to Comey authorizing a friend to share the contents ofโ a memo documenting a request from President Trump to halt the FBI’s investigation into former National Securityโ Advisor Michael Flynn. Trump โand his allies later labeled โขComeyโข a leaker, โขwith the president at one point accusing him โขof treason. Comey โhas publicly characterized โTrump as “ego driven” and likened his behavior to that of a mafia boss.
This growth follows years of reviews and investigations into the FBI’s conduct during the Trump-Russia investigation, โขincluding an inspector general review of Comey’s handling of โthe โขmemos and a special counsel investigation led by John Durham. Neither review resulted in charges against comey.
The indictment also arrives amid recent actions involvingโ Comey’s family. Earlier thisโฃ year, his daughter, โขMaurene Comey, was fired from her position as a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York and has as filed a lawsuit alleging the termination was โฃpolitically motivated. Additionally, Comey’s โson-in-law, Troy Edwards, resigned as โคa federal prosecutor โขshortly after the indictment was announced, stating he did so “to uphold my oathโข to the Constitution and the country.”โ
The Justice Departmentโ has not specified potential penalties for โฃComey if convicted. The case isโ expected to be closely watched, given the political โsensitivities surrounding the Trump-Russia investigation and the high profile of the defendant.
