Qualcomm Preps New High-Performance Chipset
Rumors point to Snapdragon 8 Plus unveiling alongside flagship 8 Elite 2
Qualcomm is reportedly gearing up for a significant product debut late this September. While anticipation builds for the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 (model SM8850), new information suggests a second, powerful chip will also make its entrance this year.
A New Contender Emerges
Whispers from China indicate a chip identified by the model number SM8845 is slated for a 2023 release. This processor is understood to sit above the forthcoming Snapdragon 8s Gen 5 lineup but will be positioned slightly below the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.
Though an official designation remains unconfirmed, industry observers are speculating this new silicon could be branded as the Snapdragon 8 Plus. Its architecture is said to mirror the first-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite’s substantial core configuration, with Qualcomm developing a unique CPU core for this iteration.
Enhanced Performance and Brand Adoption
The SM8845 is expected to benefit from a more advanced manufacturing process and will incorporate select components from the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. This blend is projected to deliver performance gains over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
According to prominent tech leaker Digital Chat Station, brands such as Oppo, OnePlus, and Vivo are eyeing the SM8845 for their upcoming devices. These smartphones may feature substantial battery capacities, with some reportedly reaching as high as 8,000 mAh.
Positioned between the 8s and the upcoming 8 Elite 2 series, the SM8845 could prove a compelling option for “Flagship Killer” devices seeking a balance of premium performance and competitive pricing. For context, the average battery capacity for flagship smartphones in 2023 was around 4,500-5,000 mAh, according to industry analyses (Statista 2023).
Future Integration Uncertainty
It remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will phase out the original Snapdragon 8 Elite chip entirely or continue to offer it alongside this new variant.
