Title: Nigeria Protests Museum Opening Over Benin Bronzes Dispute

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 10, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Benin City, Nigeria – ‌A planned museum opening in⁣ Benin City was ⁣disrupted Sunday by protests centering on the display of repatriated Benin Bronzes, ancient artifacts‌ looted from Nigeria in the late 19th century. Attendees, including international guests, were evacuated from the event as demonstrators voiced support for Oba Ewuare II, the city’s ⁣customary ruler. No injuries were reported.

The museum, slated to officially open Tuesday, was‌ intended to house a meaningful collection of the returned Bronzes – sculptures adn ⁣plaques seized by ‌British soldiers during a punitive expedition⁣ in 1897 and later dispersed to museums worldwide. The⁣ incident underscores ⁤ongoing tensions surrounding the ownership and control of these culturally significant objects, even as international institutions increasingly acknowledge the legitimacy of Nigeria’s claims and initiate⁢ repatriation efforts. ⁤The future of the museum’s opening, and the display of the ⁢artifacts, remains⁤ uncertain.

According to reports, the protests stemmed ⁢from disagreements between the Oba and museum organizers ⁣regarding the exhibition of the returned Bronzes. A 2023 law signed by ⁣then-President‌ Muhammadu Buhari designates the Oba as the ⁣custodian of the museum’s artifacts. Plans to display the Bronzes were subsequently suspended.

The⁢ museum, privately owned by the MOWAA trust‌ – a non-profit established in 2020 – receives funding from the state government, the british Museum, German museums, and other grants.‌ In a statement, the museum asserted the former state government has no financial interest in its operations. Nigeria’s federal government stated it⁣ is monitoring the situation “with deep concern.”

The disruption comes as Nigeria continues to receive returned artifacts from across the globe. In June, the Netherlands repatriated 119 Benin Bronzes, marking the largest single return to date. The ongoing effort to reclaim these cultural treasures represents a significant moment in post-colonial redress and a ‍renewed‍ focus on preserving Nigeria’s heritage.‌ The museum has suspended further⁣ activities and ‍requested visitors postpone their visits ⁣until the situation is resolved. It has not yet responded to requests for ‌comment from ‌the associated Press.

France Suspends Shein Access Amidst Protests Over Controversial Store Opening

France Suspends Shein Access as Retailer Launches First Global Store

PARIS – France has suspended access to Shein’s online platform, coinciding with⁣ the fast-fashion giant’s opening of its first brick-and-mortar store worldwide in Paris on Thursday. the move, announced by the ⁢French government, reflects growing⁤ concerns over the environmental⁤ and social impact of ultra-fast ‍fashion and comes as France seeks to curb the influence of companies‍ like ⁣Shein,⁤ Temu, ⁢and ‌AliExpress.

The suspension targets Shein’s website and app, escalating tensions ⁤with the Chinese-owned retailer. France is enacting a draft⁢ law aimed at combating fast fashion through measures including consumer awareness campaigns, advertising bans, taxes on imported ⁢parcels, and stricter waste management ⁤regulations. The Senate adopted the proposal earlier this year, and the⁣ government has notified the European commission as it moves toward finalizing the legislation.

Despite the French government’s concerns, Shein’s⁣ France country Manager, Xavier Cottendin, previously dismissed allegations of human rights abuses in the company’s supply chain, praising Shein’s ⁤efforts to improve its practices. “Today, it’s a brand that produces under ⁢much more legitimate conditions,” he ⁢stated. “We ensured that the entire production chain, ‌from manufacturing to delivery,‍ complies strictly with French and European regulations and standards.” These claims ⁣are countered by ongoing scrutiny regarding⁢ Shein’s sourcing practices, including past ⁤reports ⁢detailing⁢ potential links to forced labor in the⁤ Xinjiang region⁢ of ⁢China, where human rights abuses ⁤ were committed against members of the ethnic Uyghur group and other ‌Muslim minorities.

the opening of Shein’s Paris store marks a significant step for the online retailer, which has rapidly gained popularity in⁤ Europe with its low prices and‍ constant stream of⁣ new products. However, fast fashion’s business model ‌has drawn criticism for its environmental, ⁤social, and economic‍ costs. The United Nations⁢ reports the textile industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global greenhouse‌ gas emissions and contributes to water depletion.

Thibaut Ledunois, director of entrepreneurship⁣ and innovation at the French federation of women’s ready-to-wear, criticized⁢ Shein’s expansion, stating, “shein is developing a gorgeous showcase in our country,⁤ justifying all the bad, and sad and horrible business that they develop all‌ around the world.” The French⁤ government’s action signals a broader effort to regulate the fast-fashion industry and promote more⁣ sustainable practices.

Title: Tanzania Election: Allegations of Mass Killings and Cover-Up

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 4, 2025

Tanzania Opposition claims Security Forces Concealing Election Violence Death Toll

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – Tanzania’s main opposition party,⁤ Chadema, alleges⁣ that security ⁤forces are secretly disposing of the ⁢bodies of victims following recent post-election violence, perhaps obscuring the true scale of the deaths. The claims come as ‌life slowly returns to normal in major cities after a six-day internet shutdown and a period of unrest following the March presidential election.

Chadema leaders report at least 400 deaths in the Tunduma area of ‍the⁣ Mbeya region alone, with hundreds more reported across other regions. The party alleges security forces are “holding dead bodies” and secretly dumping remains⁣ to ‌minimize the reported number of killings.

“We want to see⁢ those who shot Tanzanians⁤ being held accountable,” stated Chadema official Deogratius⁣ Munishi, adding ‌the party will not engage in political negotiations‌ with the government until electoral and judicial reforms are implemented to ensure justice.

Independent human rights lawyer Tito Magoti, ⁣based in Dar es Salaam, described Tanzania as being “in such ⁢crisis,” with citizens searching for missing relatives and grappling with ⁢a death⁤ toll he believes exceeds Chadema’s figures. ⁢Magoti reported receiving a message Tuesday from a source near Arusha detailing two army trucks leaving a hospital mortuary loaded with corpses – one full, the other half-full – and a suspicion that authorities planned to bury the bodies in a forest ‍as part of a cover-up. He also expressed concern about hospital‌ complicity.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan, inaugurated Monday as Tanzania’s ⁢first female leader, acknowledged loss of⁤ life in her inaugural address and called for ⁤a return to normalcy.⁤

Authorities have warned against sharing photos and ‌videos that could incite ‍panic, and sent‍ text messages to mobile phone users threatening “treason charges” for disseminating images deemed to demean human life or cause unrest. A social media page sharing images and videos of alleged election protest victims was taken down monday after rapidly gaining followers.

On Tuesday, Dar⁢ es Salaam and Dodoma saw⁢ a gradual resumption of normal activity, with ⁣gas stations, grocery stores, and public transport reopening. The⁣ government spokesperson on Monday⁤ instructed public workers to ⁢return to work, ending a work-from-home ‍order implemented after a Wednesday curfew.

Tanzania: President Blames Foreigners After Election Protests

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 3, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (November 6, 2023) – Tanzania’s newly sworn-in President Samia Suluhu Hassan has attributed recent deadly protests following disputed elections to foreign interference, as unrest continues to disrupt⁤ daily life across the East African nation. The protests erupted after the Oct. 28 election results ⁣were announced, wiht the main opposition party, Chadema, rejecting the outcome as illegitimate.

The violence has led to a ⁤crackdown, including the⁤ deployment of the military to quell ⁢riots and intermittent internet connectivity. Reports of casualties vary widely, with the U.N. human rights office confirming credible‍ reports of at ⁢least 10 deaths in⁢ dar es Salaam, Shinyanga,‍ and Morogoro. However, Charles Kitima, secretary general of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference, claims “hundreds” ⁣have died based on community reports. The unrest impacts ordinary citizens, with gas stations and grocery shops remaining closed in Dar es Salaam and universities postponing ‌reopening, ⁤originally scheduled for Nov. 3.

President Hassan, sworn in Monday, has vowed justice for‍ those who lost loved ones but also signaled a firm response to what she describes as external ⁣instigation. Chadema party leader Tundu Lissu has been imprisoned for months, charged with treason after advocating for electoral reforms.Another ‌opposition figure, Luhaga Mpina of the ACT-Wazalendo Party, was barred from running in the election.

Regional leaders attended Hassan’s ‍swearing-in, including the presidents of Mozambique, Zambia, Burundi, and Somalia. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema urged Tanzanians to reject violence, while Kenyan President William Ruto⁣ called for dialog to maintain ⁤stability. The violence has also ⁣disrupted ‍regional trade, closing the Namanga border crossing with Kenya, leaving⁤ trucks carrying agricultural goods ‍stranded.

Title: Tanzania Election: Hassan Wins Landslide Amidst Protests and Concerns

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 1, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

DAR ES SALAAM, ⁣Tanzania – Tanzanian President Samia⁤ Suluhu Hassan has secured a landslide victory in⁤ Wednesday’s presidential election, winning‌ over⁢ 97% of the vote, according⁤ to⁣ official results announced by the National Electoral Commission. The outcome extends ⁤the⁢ Chama⁣ cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party’s decades-long rule since⁤ Tanzania’s independence from Britain⁤ in 1961.

The election took ⁤place ‍amid concerns over political repression and restrictions on opposition ⁤groups.‍ Chadema opposition leader ‍Freeman Mbowe has been jailed for months ‍on treason charges following calls for electoral ⁢reforms. Luhaga Mpina, of the ACT-Wazalendo group,⁤ was barred from running.

Rights groups, including Amnesty ‍International, reported a pattern of‍ enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings in the ⁣lead-up to the polls. ‍A United Nations panel of human rights experts cited over 200‍ cases‍ of ‍enforced disappearance since 2019, expressing alarm ⁤over “a pattern of repression.” The International⁢ crisis Group noted an “unprecedented crackdown on political opponents” under Hassan’s leadership, citing restrictions on ⁣social media platforms like X⁢ and JamiiForums, and intimidation‌ of⁢ critical voices.

Critics argue Hassan’s approach⁢ differs from previous leaders ⁣who, while maintaining control, tolerated a degree⁤ of opposition. Her leadership is described as⁤ more authoritarian, contrasting with youth-led democracy movements gaining traction elsewhere in the‌ region.

CCM⁣ maintains ties ⁢with the Communist Party of china and is deeply integrated with the Tanzanian state, ‍controlling the⁤ security‍ apparatus and ⁢facilitating leadership‍ transitions every five ⁤to ten ‌years. This orderly succession⁤ has contributed⁤ to Tanzania’s reputation for political stability and ‍peace, ‌bolstering‌ CCM’s support, especially in rural‍ areas.

Title: Tanzania Election: Hassan Wins Landslide Amidst Protests and Concerns

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 1, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Dodoma, Tanzania – Samia Suluhu Hassan ‌has secured a second term as President of Tanzania wiht an ⁢overwhelming majority, official results ⁤announced today show. Hassan‌ won more‌ than 97% of the vote in an election marred by accusations of repression and a crackdown on political⁢ opposition, ⁢continuing the decades-long dominance of the Chama Cha ⁢Mapinduzi (CCM) party.

The landslide victory mirrors⁤ patterns ‍seen⁣ elsewhere in the ⁤region, where genuine electoral competition is rare. Victory is uncommon in East ‍Africa; only President Paul Kagame of Rwanda regularly wins by similar margins. However, rights groups including Amnesty International ⁢documented a ⁤disturbing trend of enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings in Tanzania leading up to the polls.

A United Nations panel of human rights experts reported over 200 cases of enforced‍ disappearance since⁤ 2019, ‌expressing alarm ⁢over “a pattern of‍ repression”⁣ ahead of the election. The International ‌Crisis group noted ⁢Hassan oversaw “an unprecedented crackdown⁢ on⁤ political opponents,” including restrictions ⁣on freedom⁣ of expression – a ban ⁢on X ‍(formerly Twitter)⁢ and limitations on ‍the Tanzanian digital platform JamiiForums – and the intimidation or arrest of critical voices.

Despite a move towards multi-party politics in⁤ 1992, Tanzania has largely maintained single-party rule under the CCM, which has governed since the country’s independence from Britain in 1961. Critics contrast Hassan’s increasingly authoritarian style with that ⁢of previous leaders who, while maintaining control, allowed for a degree of opposition.‌

The CCM is deeply intertwined with⁢ the Tanzanian state, controlling ⁣the security apparatus and facilitating leadership transitions within⁣ the party. Hassan ⁣herself ascended to ⁤the presidency without disruption following the sudden ‌death‍ of her predecessor, John Pombe Magufuli, during ⁢his ‌second term. This orderly transition reinforced Tanzania’s reputation for political stability and peace, contributing to the CCM’s strong support, particularly in rural areas.
