## The Enduring Value โof Technological History: A โฃPresidential Viewpoint
History isn’t simply a record of the past; it’s a powerful tool forโ shaping the future. In the field of electrical engineering and computing, understanding our evolution is crucial forโ continued innovation โand responsible technological โdevelopment. โคBy examining past โsuccesses and failures, we can build โa stronger foundation โฃfor the technologies ofโฃ tomorrow.
The โคIEEE has long recognized this importance, maintaining a dedicated History Committee โฃsince itsโ inception. This committee, alongside the IEEE History Center,โข activelyโค preserves, researches, and promotes the legacy of โขelectrical engineering and computing thru aโ variety of programs.
One particularly โขinspiring aspect of this work is the IEEE Milestone program. These dedications recognize notable technical achievements globally, and attending these โขceremonies hasโฃ been a consistently rewarding โexperience. These events, organized by local volunteers working with technical experts andโ historians, celebrate pioneering accomplishments andโ the individuals โฃbehind them, demonstrating the positive โฃimpact of technology on humanity.โข They offer a unique prospectโค to connect with the global IEEE community while experiencing theโค history โof technology firsthand. This year brought the reopening of the IEEE Global Museum, whichโค provides traveling exhibits focused on the history of electrotechnology to IEEE members โคand the โขpublic. The museum’s mission isโค to highlight how technological progress builds across generations, empowering engineers and researchers to leverage โpast โคachievements for the betterment of lives.
The IEEE oral history program isโ another vital โขcomponent of this preservation effort. Currently boasting nearly โ900 interviews accessible on ethw.org, thisโค program captures invaluable spoken memories and personal perspectives of historical significance. As IEEE โpresident, I am personally looking forward to contributing to this important archive.
Moreover, IEEE โREACH provides preuniversity teachersโ with free resources that โฃcontextualize science, technology, andโค engineering โwithin their broader socialโ and human frameworks. These resources help students understand not only *how* technologies function, butโข also *how* they have shaped – and been โshaped by – society.
Preserving the history of ourโค profession is essential for โฃfostering innovation, inspiring future generations, promotingโ collaboration, and ensuring the responsible, lasting, and ethical โdevelopment of technology. โ It’sโ a commitmentโค to building a better future informedโ by the lessons of the past.
I encourage you to exploreโค the โคwealth โof programs and resources available at history.ieee.org.
