Womenโฃ and Older Adults Now Dominate U.S. Gamer Demographics, New Study Reveals
WASHINGTON D.C. – Challenging long-held โstereotypes,โค aโ new โglobal โstudy reveals a โคnotable shift in the makeupโค of the gaming community, with women nowโค comprising theโข majority of gamers in the United States.while โglobally, 51% of gamers identify as male and 48% as female, the โAmericanโข landscape differs โฃmarkedly, with 52% identifying as female. the โtrend extends beyond the U.S., with evenโ higher female representation โฃin countries like Brazil (57%) and โขSouth Africa (58%).
The findings, detailed in โขa recent report, highlight a broadening definition of what constitutes a “video game,” moving beyond traditional console and PC titles. Today’s gaming ecosystem encompasses puzzle games, role-playing games, strategy games, simulations, and increasingly, mobile games played on smartphones andโฃ tablets.
“The misconception is that people think of video games asโข ‘I’m sitting down at โmy โขPC or console, and I’m playing โa first person โคshooter game,'” explained Aubreyโค Quinn, senior โvice president at the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), in โan interview with Variety.”that’s really an โฃunfortunate stereotype thatโ has stuck โto video games. Justโข like โmovies or music, there is a genre for โฃeveryone.”
The study points to the popularity ofโ accessible gamesโ like onlineโ versions of Sudoku, solitaire, Monopoly, Wordle, and the โNew York โTimes Crossword puzzle asโ key drivers of this demographic shift, โattracting a wider range of players.
Beyond simply entertainment, the โฃresearch indicates gaming offers significant benefits. Respondents reported feeling โless stressed,โ anxious, and alone through gameplay, while also experiencing โฃincreased creativity and mentalโข sharpness.โข Aโค substantial 76% of those surveyed notedโข improved problem-solvingโฃ abilities, and half (50%) reported a positive impact on their professional education or careers due to skills acquired through gaming.
“Theโ skill sets that people experienceโ throughโ gameplay translate outside of gameplay,” Quinn told Variety. “They say, ‘This makes me more resilient. Thisโฃ makes meโ more adaptableโฃ and moreโค teamwork โoriented. โคmy โฃreadingโข skills โare โimproved. My problemโ solvingโ skills are โขimproved.’ Being able to โfigure out new strategies and accomplish โsomething, โคthoseโฃ are skills that โplayers experience, and we’ve seen academics and researchers really begin โto validate that โplayer experience.”
The ESA โemphasizes that, like other popular cultural forms throughout history – from the printing press โto โขrock and roll – video games have faced unwarranted stigma. “They even thought that the printing press wasโฃ bound to make us all lazy,” Quinn quipped. “I think there is aโฃ little bit of a stubborn misconception about video games and the impact they have. Research shows that there areโฃ enormous mental, social, economic, positive benefits of game play and game creation.”
