Africa’s Continental Plan to End Cholera

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 1, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Africa Launches Enterprising Plan to Combat ⁣Surging Cholera Crisis

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – African Union member states are mobilizing under a new continental plan to⁣ aggressively tackle cholera, a preventable disease currently claiming thousands of lives across the continent. The “Continental Cholera Preparedness and Response Plan for Africa 1.0,” ‌launched⁤ in September 2025 ‌and running through February 2026, ⁢aims to curb the ⁣alarming rise in cases and ‌deaths linked to the waterborne illness.

Despite being treatable⁤ wiht safe water, sanitation, ⁣hygiene measures, and vaccines, cholera continues to devastate communities. Africa⁢ bears a ⁣disproportionate burden of ‌the global cholera impact, ⁢accounting for more than half of all cases and over 90% of related deaths1. The disease destabilizes communities, hinders economic progress, and disproportionately ⁤impacts vulnerable populations including the poor, displaced individuals, and those ‌living in fragile states2,3.

Data released in August 2025 revealed a important surge in cases, with 23 AU member states reporting 213,586 suspected cases and⁢ 4,507 deaths ⁣- more‌ than double the numbers recorded ⁣in 20222. The Democratic Republic of Congo, ⁤Sudan, South sudan, and angola collectively account for 85% ⁣of this burden.

The plan’s implementation ⁤comes amidst compounding⁣ challenges including ongoing humanitarian crises,the escalating effects of climate change,and‌ strained healthcare infrastructure. Officials emphasize the necessity of a coordinated, multisectoral approach to effectively address the outbreak and work towards long-term elimination, as ‍outlined⁢ in ⁣the Global Task‍ Force on Cholera Control’s Strategic Framework for Cholera Prevention, Control, and Elimination,⁢ 20303.

Fed Interest Rate Decision: Risks, Inflation, and 2026 Outlook

by Priya Shah – Business Editor November 1, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Federal Reserve Signals Pause in Rate Hikes, December ⁤Meeting Looms as Key Turning Point

WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Federal Reserve is nearing a ⁢potential stabilization of monetary policy after a year of aggressive ‍tightening, though officials remain cautious about declaring victory over inflation, according to recent statements. The central bank intends to gradually slow the reduction of its asset holdings, with securities reductions ⁢continuing until December 1st, in anticipation of halting “quantitative⁤ contraction” once reserve levels ‍reach a point‍ consistent with “abundant liquidity.”

While not signaling an immediate shift towards easing monetary policy,these moves are being‍ interpreted as an indication of⁤ a temporary pause in ⁢rate adjustments. The Fed appears to be prioritizing observation over further action, given ⁢a ⁤resilient economy ⁤characterized ‍by low unemployment‍ and strong‍ consumer spending.

The U.S. Dollar Index is projected to maintain its strength‌ in the coming weeks,bolstered ⁣by sustained high⁤ interest rates and demand for⁢ safe investments. However, analysts anticipate ⁣a potential recovery for gold and silver at the start of next year, especially if inflation decelerates without prompting rapid‌ interest‌ rate cuts. Should‍ the Fed maintain current rates in December while inflation remains above its target, safe-haven assets are expected to regain ⁢appeal.

The December meeting is viewed as pivotal, not only for its‍ potential impact on the interest rate path but also for shaping‌ the broader direction ⁤of ⁢monetary policy throughout 2026. The outcome will signal whether the new year will begin with a tone of ‌stability or⁢ a shift in economic rhythm.

Title: “Penha Bear”: Inside Rio’s Deadly Drug Empire

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 1, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Summary of the Article: Red Command (Comando ⁣Vermelho) ‌in Rio de Janeiro

This article details the growing power and evolving ⁣tactics of ‌the red Command (Comando vermelho – CV), a major Brazilian ‌criminal association, particularly in Rio de Janeiro. Here’s ⁢a breakdown of the key points:

1. Deep Infiltration & Corruption:

* Bribery & Negotiation: The CV operates through individuals like “Penha” (“Grandão”) who actively⁣ negotiate bribes with the Military⁢ Police (specifically those in Pacification Police Units) to reduce police presence and crackdowns. ⁣ This demonstrates a significant level of corruption ‍within law enforcement.
* Direct⁢ Communication with Police: “Grandão” even had a dedicated phone line for ‍communicating⁤ with police and leveraged‍ his connections to help ‍an officer recover a stolen vehicle.
* Judicial Corruption: The article highlights ‍a concerning issue of judges being investigated for selling sentences,contributing to a ⁢cycle of arrest ‍and release.

2.Sophisticated Organization & Communication:

* Hierarchical Structure: The CV has a rigid chain of command with clear orders and severe punishments for disobedience.
* WhatsApp as a Command Center: Traffickers utilize WhatsApp⁢ groups for:
⁤ *⁤ Issuing ⁤orders regarding drug sales and security.
⁢ * Managing sales points and armed security.
* Dealing with stolen vehicles.
* Monitoring police activity.
* Accounting for drug sales.
* Even planning executions.
* Exclusive Access: ⁢ Key leaders like “Doca” have limited access, with figures like “Pedro⁢ Bala” being among the few with‌ direct contact.

3.Expansion & Increased Brutality:

* Expansionist Project: ‍ The CV is actively expanding its influence,particularly in the ‍Jacarepaguá region of Rio de Janeiro,leading to increased violence and‌ deaths.
* Parallel Justice: The group‌ operates its ⁣own system of justice,⁣ characterized by executions and torture.
* Wealth & Power: Brutality has led to significant wealth accumulation and increased power for the CV.

4.Evolving Revenue Streams:

* Beyond Cocaine: While drug trafficking remains a major source of income, the CV is diversifying into more profitable ventures:
* Irregular sale of fuel, gold, cigarettes, and alcohol.
* “Armed Territorial Control”: The CV ‍forces residents in controlled areas to use services and suppliers chosen by the group, essentially controlling the local economy.
* “Ultracapitalization”: This diversification has led to⁣ a significant increase in the CV’s financial power.

5. Impact & ⁤Concerns:

* Infiltration of the State: ⁢The CV’s financial power allows it to infiltrate government institutions.
* “Micro-Sovereignty”: The ‍group’s control over territory creates “enclaves of⁣ micro-sovereignty,” effectively ⁣operating‌ as a mini-country with its own rules.
* Systemic Failure: The article points to a broken system where Rio de Janeiro arrests ‌many criminals but releases them ⁣due to judicial corruption.

In essence, the⁢ article paints a picture of ⁣a highly organized, financially powerful, and deeply entrenched criminal organization that is challenging the authority of⁤ the state in Rio de janeiro. It highlights the dangers of corruption, the sophistication⁤ of ⁢modern criminal networks, and the need for systemic reform to address the root causes of the problem.

Health Fund Manager Salaries Capped – Switzerland

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 31, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

## National Council Commission ⁤Proposes cap on Health ⁤Fund Executive Pay

The Social Security Commission of the National Council‍ is seeking to curb what it deems excessive compensation for health insurance fund managers, launching a‌ consultation on Friday regarding a proposed cap on executive pay.

The commission ‌argues that ‌in the highly regulated health insurance market – where benefits are standardized and affiliation is mandatory -⁢ the current remuneration levels for ⁣some insurer leadership positions have become “unacceptable.” Rising health insurance⁤ premiums are impacting both⁤ households and public finances, and the commission finds it “unjustifiable” for a health fund director to earn more than the⁤ highest-paid federal civil servants.

The proposed legislation would task the Federal Council with establishing ⁤a maximum remuneration amount ⁤for members ‍of the management and boards⁤ of directors of health insurance companies ‍operating within ⁢the compulsory insurance framework. This cap would be based on the highest salaries within the federal administration, adjusted to reflect the number of insured individuals and⁤ the ‍average overall costs per insured person.This measure‌ would *not* apply to supplementary ⁤health insurance. The Council of States committee has already signaled support for the initiative, deeming the recent increases in executive pay ⁣within this protected market “inappropriate” given the concurrent rise in⁢ health insurance premiums.

Recent reports indicate a significant⁣ jump in the remuneration of managers ‍at ⁢several health funds in recent years.(See related report).

Looking ahead, health ⁣insurance premiums are ⁢projected to increase by 4.4% in 2026. (Find out how this will impact your ⁤budget).

-title Buenos Aires: Final Scrutiny Fuels Battle for Diputamiento Seat

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor October 31, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Tight Race in Argentina‘s Congressional⁤ Count: Milei’s party Nears Lousteau‘s Seat

BUENOS AIRES – A fiercely ⁤contested race for a seat in⁣ Argentina’s Chamber of ⁣Deputies hangs in the balance as the final vote count continues, with La Libertad Avanza (LLA) closing in on current‍ deputy Martín Lousteau of Ciudadanos Unidos.⁣ The dispute centers ⁢on a mere 1,411 vote difference separating the first quotient of Ciudadanos Unidos (97,794 votes) and the eighth of LLA (96,383).

The outcome will have significant consequences: a LLA victory would leave Ciudadanos Unidos without any depiction in Congress, having also failed to secure a⁢ Senate seat. Meanwhile,United Provinces is projected to gain only‍ seven‌ deputies nationwide.

the tension is palpable, with both sides ⁤closely⁣ monitoring the ongoing scrutiny. LLA is banking on strong support from Argentines living abroad to‍ overcome the current deficit.⁢ Iñaki ⁣Gutiérrez,⁢ a libertarian commentator,⁢ highlighted the stakes on social media, stating, “Martín‍ Lousteau is very few votes away from being left out of Congress ‌and that one more representative of President Milei will enter.⁣ All of Argentina wants the one who ‍raised his hand to collect $12,000,000 to ⁢stay out,” – a reference to ⁣a recent Senate vote to increase per diems.

To overturn⁣ the current‍ results, the final⁣ scrutiny would‍ need to reveal at least 1,411 votes incorrectly attributed to Lousteau. Alternatively, ⁤LLA would need to considerably increase it’s‌ vote total. Because ⁤the contested votes relate to the eighth candidate on the LLA list, the party would⁢ need⁢ to add approximately 11,288 votes to its current tally to surpass‍ Lousteau.

As of ⁢this morning, the final count⁣ from seven of⁤ the 15 communes included ‍votes from ‍people deprived of their ⁢liberty and⁤ Argentines abroad. LLA claims ⁤to have received‌ 6,531 ‌votes from abroad, giving them a 228-vote lead⁤ over Lousteau after applying the necessary multiplication factor.

However, radicalism, Lousteau’s political space, remains confident ⁤in maintaining the current ⁢lead.Sources close to ‌the national senator told ⁢ THE NATION that “There is no ⁤chance that Lousteau will lose the bench,” citing meticulous monitoring of⁤ election minutes on⁢ Sunday.

A UCR representative involved in the recount declined to comment on the specific seat in dispute until the process is complete, anticipating a conclusion by noon tomorrow.

This‍ close contest‌ underscores the ⁤deeply‌ polarized⁢ political landscape in Argentina following the election of President Javier Milei and highlights ⁤the importance of every single vote in shaping the ⁢composition of the nation’s legislature.

Pereira continued,‌ stating, “He⁢ is the greatest coach in the history of Palmeiras.
