Zohran Mamdani: A Left-Wing Uprising in New York’s Mayoral Race

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 3, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

New York‍ Mayoral Candidate Zohran⁣ Mamdani Inspires French Left as ‍Elections Loom

NEW YORK ⁣- Zohran mamdani, a‌ Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City, is drawing attention ⁢from La⁣ France Insoumise (LFI), the left-wing ⁤political party in France, as he⁢ appeals to Gen Z voters through a savvy ⁤social media strategy. Mamdani, son of filmmaker Mira Nair who won an award at‌ Cannes in 1988 for Hello Bombay!, utilizes platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube⁣ with humorous videos, attracting a following among New York’s influencers and garnering support for his ⁤campaign.

The interest from LFI stems from Mamdani’s success in mobilizing younger voters, a demographic crucial to their own political goals. Jean-Luc ⁤Mélenchon,⁤ leader of ⁢LFI, ⁣has also recognized the power of new technologies, ‍boasting 2.7 million TikTok followers – significantly ‍more than ⁣his French political rivals Gabriel Attal and Jordan ‌bardella, both with 2.2 million.

However, political scientist⁢ Christophe ‍Sente of the Free University of Brussels cautions against direct comparisons, stating,‌ “it‌ would be misleading‍ to equate the Democratic Party with the French or european left. Thes are⁢ two different traditions,‍ two ⁤different party systems.” He further notes this ⁣is the first time the‌ French left has⁣ looked to ⁢radical politics in the United States for inspiration, traditionally aligning more with social liberalism.

LFI⁤ views ‍Mamdani’s campaign as an prospect to build international solidarity and demonstrate the global appeal of their political proposals. The party has previously ‍celebrated the elections of Lula in Brazil and Claudia Sheinbaum⁢ in Mexico. A victory‍ for Mamdani in New York‍ would be particularly notable, given upcoming municipal elections in France in five months, offering potential lessons for LFI’s ‍own campaign strategies. Manon Aubry, a member of the European Parliament for LFI, recently visited new‌ York to “exchange with campaign teams” ⁤ and share experiences.

Despite past criticisms of U.S. foreign policy, LFI acknowledges‍ that‌ a win for Mamdani would reshape the political ⁤landscape ⁣and perhaps necessitate a reassessment of their views on the United States.

Title: Trump Doubts US War with Venezuela, Expresses Concerns About Maduro

Rising Tensions in the Caribbean: U.S. Operations and the Future of Maduro‘s Leadership

Caracas, Venezuela – A‍ series⁤ of recent incidents in the Caribbean Sea ‌involving attacks on vessels suspected⁤ of‍ drug trafficking have resulted in at least 64 confirmed fatalities,⁤ with ⁤only three survivors⁢ – a Peruvian⁢ and a Colombian repatriated to⁣ thier home‍ countries, and a third individual rescued following an attack last‍ Wednesday. These operations are occurring amidst⁣ escalating rhetoric from the Trump administration regarding Venezuelan‌ President Nicolás Maduro and the possibility of⁣ further intervention.

Initially, the Trump Administration framed these actions as necesary to ⁣combat drug cartels, characterizing⁢ the ‍situation as an “armed conflict.” However, the administration has increasingly suggested a broader objective – potentially the‌ overthrow of Maduro. The U.S. government ⁤accuses ⁣Maduro of being involved in ‌drug trafficking, labeling Venezuela ⁢a “narco-state,” and has⁣ doubled the‌ reward for⁢ his capture‌ to fifty million dollars. Reports ‍indicate the CIA has been authorized to conduct covert missions within Venezuela, and President Trump has⁢ alluded to a “second phase” of the campaign moving to land.

When questioned by O’Donnell about the potential for military action, President Trump ‌offered a non-committal response: “I’m not saying it’s true or ‌false. I wouldn’t ‌be inclined to say I would, but I’m not going ⁤to tell⁢ a journalist if I’m going to attack or not.”

The‍ United States currently maintains a significant military presence in the Caribbean, ‌consisting of a dozen American ships, 10,000 soldiers, and F-35 ⁢aircraft. This force is expected to be augmented‍ by the arrival of ⁣the Gerald Ford ⁢ aircraft ‍carrier, ⁤the ‌largest and‍ most modern in the U.S.‌ fleet, boasting a crew of 5,000.

The most recent reported attack, ‌occurring on Saturday, resulted in ⁣the deaths of ⁤all three individuals on board, as announced by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth⁢ via Twitter. Hegseth has not released details regarding the identities of those killed, the ‌alleged drugs being transported, or⁣ the criminal association purportedly controlling the vessel.

He stated the boat was operated by an “organization designated as terrorist.”⁤ In February, the ⁣State Department added⁣ the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua to its ‍list of ⁤Foreign Terrorist Organizations,⁣ alongside‌ six Mexican cartels: ⁢Sinaloa, Jalisco Nueva Generación, del Noroeste, del Golfo,‌ La Nueva Familia ⁣Michoacana, and ‌the United Carteles.

Hegseth ‌further asserted, ‌”Our⁢ intelligence services knew that this‌ vessel-like ALL‍ THE ⁤OTHERS-was involved in illicit⁤ drug smuggling, was⁢ traveling along a known drug trafficking route‍ and ‌was ‍transporting narcotics.” He accompanied his statement with a ‌video depicting the moment a U.S. projectile struck and destroyed the ‍boat.

“A live cockroach wriggles”… Anger explodes over popular Chinese bread brand ‘Cockroach Bread’

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 1, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Cockroach Found⁢ in Bread Sparks Outrage Against Chinese Baker

BEIJING – ‍A consumer’s finding of a live cockroach inside ⁣a loaf of bread from a popular chinese manufacturer has ignited ‌a firestorm of public anger and ⁤questions⁢ about food safety standards.‍ The incident, which came to light ⁢after the‌ consumer shared video evidence online, ⁤has prompted calls for accountability and a thorough inquiry⁣ into the company’s production practices.

The‍ bread’s manufacturer initially ⁤claimed a review of CCTV footage from its production line -‌ located on the ‌third floor of the factory – revealed no irregularities. Though, the response ⁤quickly ⁤drew criticism after reports surfaced alleging the company offered the consumer 2,000 yuan (approximately ⁤$280 USD or 400,000 Korean ‍won)⁢ to‍ delete the ⁣video evidence. ‍The ‌consumer, identified ⁤as Mr. A, refused the offer, demanding a formal apology and acknowledgement of quality control issues.⁢

This incident arrives amid heightened⁤ scrutiny of food hygiene⁤ in China, following ‌recent concerns at a pickled cabbage factory in Huludao ⁣City, Liaoning Province.Authorities there are investigating⁣ after video ‌emerged of⁢ a worker handling cabbage‍ while smoking, prompting plans to discard all potentially ‌contaminated products.

mr. ‍A stated, “No sincere apology or improvement has ‍been made in response to consumer complaints,” ⁣emphasizing that a public⁢ acknowledgement of ⁢the problem is ‍a necessary first step. The manufacturer has‍ as announced it will investigate ‌the source⁢ of the contamination once the ‍consumer ‌returns the product in question.⁣ The unfolding situation underscores growing anxieties among Chinese consumers ‌regarding food safety and ⁣the ⁢effectiveness ⁢of quality ‌control ‌measures within the country’s vast food production industry.

-title France Approves ‘Tax on Unproductive Wealth’ Replacing Wealth Tax

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor November 1, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

French Assembly Approves “Tax on ‌Unproductive Wealth,” Defying Expectations ⁢on Party Lines

Paris – In a surprising⁣ outcome, the French national Assembly today adopted an amendment creating a new tax targeting‍ “unproductive wealth,” despite opposition from key parties ‌including La France Insoumise (LFI), renaissance,⁣ and ‌Les Républicains (LR).‌ The vote saw an unusual coalition of ⁣support from the Rassemblement National (RN),the Socialist Party (PS),and the MoDem.

the amendment, initially proposed by Jean-Paul Mattei, aims to⁢ tax assets deemed unproductive, such as non-productive real estate, luxury items like ⁢yachts and planes, digital assets, and ⁤certain life insurance ⁢funds. It represents a significant shift from the⁤ previous Impôt de solidarité sur la Fortune (ISF), which was abolished ⁤in 2017.

During debate, Minister of Action and Public Accounts Amélie⁣ de Montchalin described the new levy as “a ‌form of ‌ISF on euro funds and liquidity,” but emphasized, “what is certain is that it is not the ISF that we had before 2017. (…) ⁤It is ‍indeed ⁣a form of hybrid ⁣taxation.”

The approved‍ version‌ of the‍ tax⁣ differs substantially from its original drafting. A sub-amendment ⁤by Philippe Brun successfully excluded one property per tax household ‍from the tax⁢ base, up to a reduction ‍of⁣ one million ⁣euros. Another ⁣Brun amendment reinstated rented goods into the base. Mattei’s initial proposal to‍ raise the tax payment threshold to two million euros was ⁢also altered, with a Brun sub-amendment maintaining the threshold at 1.3 million euros.

The left-leaning opposition outside the PS largely voted against the ⁢amendment. Éric Coquerel,‍ president of the Finance Committee, stated they had “weakened the IFI without even reintegrating the ISF.”

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed the goverment⁣ remains “opposed to ‍the reestablishment of the ISF.”

The new tax base ⁣will ‍exclude productive real estate assets – properties rented for over a year and meeting environmental criteria – and will utilize a flat rate of 1% after the scale ⁤was modified.

Title: Former Transport Secretary Expelled from Intercidades Bar Over Rule Dispute

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 1, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Former secretary ⁣of State for Transport Asked to Leave Intercidades Bar Car Due to ⁢New CP rules

Lisbon, Portugal – Frederico Francisco, a former Secretary of State for Transport adn current researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto, recently experienced firsthand new restrictions imposed on the use of bar carriages on Portugal’s Intercidades trains.Francisco was reportedly asked ⁣to move ⁤from ⁣a bar car seat after being observed working during a ‍journey⁢ between Porto and Lisbon,a route he has‌ travelled by train for 15 years.

The incident highlights a recent policy shift ⁣by‌ Comboios de Portugal (CP) aimed at addressing overcrowding in the popular ⁣bar cars. CP implemented the changes following an increase in passenger complaints about individuals occupying bar seating for extended periods – for activities like ⁢working, reading, ⁢or studying ‌- rather than utilizing the space for its intended purpose: consuming bar service products.

According to a notice posted ⁢in the Intercidades⁤ bar ⁢cars, ‍the seats are now‌ “intended only ⁤for the consumption of bar products”‍ and are not to be occupied by ⁣those “who‍ do not⁣ express the intention to consume.” The notice also reiterates a prohibition on using cell phones or⁣ other electronic devices on speakerphone within the bar car.

Francisco, who stated ‌he did not identify himself as ⁤a former official during the interaction, defended the bar car as a key ⁤advantage of⁣ train travel, particularly when compared to bus journeys. “I would often return‍ at ⁤dinner ‍time and take ‍the chance to go to the bar to eat something and spend 20 to 30 minutes of ⁣the journey there, working, reading, or just ⁤contemplating‍ the landscape,” he explained.”I consider that ‍one of the differentiating advantages of the train in relation to the bus is, precisely, ⁣this‌ possibility of being able to go to the bar.” He pointed to‍ examples in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France, where trains ‌offer quality bar and ⁣restaurant⁢ services.

CP responded⁣ to inquiries from PÚBLICO stating the new⁣ rules where ⁤necessary ‍due to increased occupancy rates on⁤ Intercidades trains. The company noted numerous complaints from passengers unable to access bar seating due to ⁣prolonged‌ occupation by others.

The situation⁢ is further elaborate by the recent ‍success of the Green Rail⁢ Pass, which has increased demand for Intercidades services, leading to frequently sold-out trains. In some instances, passengers traveling from stations without open ticket offices – particularly in the Alentejo region⁤ – have been left wiht no option but⁢ to ‌utilize ‌the bar car⁢ for‌ seating.

looking ahead, though, the availability of bar cars on Portuguese trains is set to diminish. New trains ordered from Stadler and⁢ Alstom will feature only limited space - a single area per carriage – for vending ‍machines, moving away from the ‍European model of offering dedicated catering⁢ services on rail lines.
