Jakarta, Indonesia – TikTok has temporarily suspended its live streaming feature in Indonesia following days of escalating violence linked to protests over the death of a man struck by a police vehicle. The platform announced the move on Saturday, citing concerns for user safety.
“Due to escalating violence during protests in Indonesia, we have voluntarily introduced additional safeguards to keep TikTok a safe and civil space,” a tiktok spokesperson told AFP. “Out of an abundance of caution, TikTok LIVE is temporarily suspended for a few days in Indonesia.”
The protests began on Friday, spreading across major cities including the capital, Jakarta, and Makassar in South Sulawesi. Tragically,a fire at the Makassar city council building resulted in at least three fatalities.Demonstrations continued on Saturday in regions including Jakarta, Surabaya (East Java), Bali, and mataram (West Nusa Tenggara).
