NASA โto โฃAnnounce New Finding from perseverance Roverโฃ on Mars
PASADENA, Calif. – NASA โwill detail a new finding from its Perseverance Mars rover in a media briefing today, offering potential โฃnewโฃ insights into the red โคPlanet’s ancient habitability. The announcement comes as the rover continuesโ its exploration of Jezero Crater, aโ region believed toโค have once โheld a lake billions of years ago.
As landing in February 2021, Perseverance has been โขcollecting rock and sediment samples in search of potential biosignatures – โindicators of past โmicrobial life.โ Thisโ latest discovery, stemming from analysis of a sample โcollected in July 2024 and namedโ “Sapphire Canyon,”โข builds โฃupon the rover’s โขongoing work to characterizeโค the geology of Jezero Crater and assess its potential to have supportedโฃ life.โค The findings will be shared during a live event withโฃ opportunities for media โquestions.
The briefing will cover details of the “Sapphire Canyon” sample, gathered โfrom rocky outcrops along the edges of Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley that fed into Jezero Crater. Perseverance has, to โdate, collectedโข 30 samples, leaving six empty tubes for future collection. The rover utilizes โan abrasion tool for detailed analysisโ of geologicโข targets, alongside a weatherโค station providingโ environmental data relevant to future human missions and โtests of spacesuit material durability.
The event will be held today, and โmedia members wishing to ask questions by phone must โขRSVP to rexana.v.vizza@jpl.nasa.gov no laterโ than one hourโฃ before the start time. NASA’s media โaccreditation โฃpolicy is available โonline.
The Perseverance rover mission is managed by Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)โ forโฃ NASA’s โScience Mission directorate. More information about the mission is available at https://www.nasa.gov/perseverance.
