Don’t Overload Your Car’s Head Unit: Avoid Apps That Cause Problems

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor February 22, 2026
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

BSD CITY, Indonesia – As Android-based head units develop into increasingly popular in automobiles, offering features akin to tablets such as navigation and video streaming, a growing number of vehicle owners are experiencing performance issues due to excessive application downloads. Experts warn that treating these head units like smartphones can significantly impact their lifespan and functionality.

Ricky, owner of Vitur Audio in BSD Tangerang, reports a surge in customers complaining of sluggish performance, frequent freezing, and unexpected restarts after only a few months of apply. “Head units aren’t smartphones. Their RAM and processors are limited,” Ricky explained. “Installing too many applications, especially those running in the background, overloads the system and causes it to overheat.”

According to Ricky, the majority of aftermarket head units currently available are equipped with only 2GB or 4GB of RAM and limited storage capacity. When storage nears capacity, the system struggles to read and write data efficiently, leading to increased temperatures and potential overheating. This issue is compounded by the fact that many applications continue to operate in the background, consuming valuable resources.

The consequences extend beyond performance degradation. Excessive application usage can also slow down the boot-up process when the vehicle is started. Critical features like rearview cameras and navigation systems may experience delays, posing safety risks, particularly during parking or maneuvering in tight spaces. “We’ve seen cases where GPS signals become intermittent or rearview cameras exhibit delays because the system is overloaded,” Ricky stated. “That’s dangerous when you’re trying to park or navigate a narrow space.”

To mitigate these problems, Ricky advises vehicle owners to install only essential applications, such as navigation and music players. He recommends avoiding resource-intensive games, heavy streaming apps, and redundant applications that perform similar functions. Maintaining at least 30% free storage space is also crucial for ensuring system stability.

Regularly restarting the head unit and disabling auto-start features for non-essential applications can further optimize performance. For users who wish to utilize demanding applications like video streaming services, Ricky suggests leveraging smartphone integration through Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to offload the processing burden from the head unit.

Victory Audio, a car audio specialist located in Serpong, BSD, and Jakarta, offers both wholesale sales and installation services, according to their Facebook page. The company can be reached at 0811-1999-0175, and operates Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM, according to their Instagram profile.

By adopting a more mindful approach to application usage, vehicle owners can maximize the performance and longevity of their head units, ensuring a reliable and enjoyable in-car entertainment experience.
