Sony Launches ‘PlayStation Family‘ App, Expanding Parental Controls Amid Industry Focus on Child Safety
SAN MATEO, CA – September 10, 2025 – Sony Interactive Entertainment today released “PlayStation Family,” a dedicated mobile app for iOS and Android designed too give parents comprehensive control over their children’s gaming activity on PlayStation consoles. The app consolidates existing parental controls into a single interface and introduces new features focused on real-time monitoring and management.
The “PlayStation Family” app provides parents with real-time notifications about the games their children are playing and allows them to approve or deny requests for extra playtime or access to restricted titles.Daily and weekly activity reports detail console usage and most-played games, offering parents insight into their children’s gaming habits. Customizable time limits can be set for each day of the week.
Beyond playtime management, the app allows for configuration of content filters based on age-appropriateness, with pre-set recommendations for different age groups that can be further customized. Parents can also adjust privacy settings, manage access to social features, and oversee spending activity – including adding funds, checking balances, and establishing monthly spending limits.
The launch of “PlayStation Family” arrives as the gaming industry increasingly prioritizes child safety. Recent scrutiny has been directed at platforms like Roblox, where a lawsuit filed by the Louisiana Attorney General alleges insufficient protections for young users. Roblox has responded by expanding its age-estimation technology to all users and partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to implement standardized age and content ratings.
