North Americans Show Grit at Challenging Rwanda Road Worlds

Kigali, Rwanda – Despite‌ brutal climbs and ‍challenging ⁣altitude, North american riders ‌demonstrated resilience at the 2025 UCI ‍Road World Championships in ‌Rwanda, with standout performances from young American talent and steadfast efforts from the ⁣U.S. and Canadian teams. The championships, held on a demanding course in Kigali, saw Great Britain’s Harry hudson claim the elite men’s ⁤solo victory, while the elite women’s race was won by another rider not mentioned in this article.

The U.S. elite men’s team faced a especially tough race, arriving without key riders Matteo Jorgenson, Brandon McNulty, and⁢ Neilson Powless. Of the five Americans who started – Kevin Vermaerke, Larry Warbasse, Quinn ⁢Simmons, luke Lamperti, and Will Barta – ⁢only ⁣Vermaerke ‌managed to reach the finish, battling⁣ through ⁢the relentless climbs to‌ secure 23rd place. The altitude⁣ and course proved decisive, shredding the peloton‍ and leaving Vermaerke ‌as the sole U.S. finisher.

In the U23 men’s race,American rider Drake demonstrated impressive form, bridging⁤ to⁢ an early move and extending the gap to nearly ⁣two minutes before ultimately finishing⁢ strongly. His performance throughout the week marked him as a revelation at the championships, particularly given his recent entry onto the junior circuit.

On the women’s side, Chloé ‍dygert of the U.S. persevered through pain to finish 17th in the elite women’s road race. The 165km⁣ circuit, featuring 3,350 meters of climbing,⁣ proved challenging,⁤ and dygert finished the race visibly exhausted, collapsing after the ⁣finish with a heavily ⁣bandaged left leg. Ruth Edwards was distanced earlier in the race, on lap five.

Team USA looks ahead to the 2026 World Championships in Montréal, anticipating a more favorable course ⁢closer to home.

Finn Wins U23 Road World Championship in Stunning Victory

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 27, 2025

Finn Wins U23 Road World Championship, Follows Up Junior Title

Kigali, Rwanda – Lorenzo ⁣Finn of Great Britain secured the U23 men’s road world⁣ championship title Friday, ‍adding⁣ to his junior world title won in Zürich last year. the 18-year-old launched a decisive attack 6km from the finish, distancing Jan Huber (Switzerland) and ultimately claiming victory‌ in a race of‌ attrition ‍that saw over 50 riders fail to finish.

finn’s win comes⁤ after narrowly ⁤missing the podium in Monday’s ⁣U23 time trial and signals his‌ rapid ascent in the sport. Racing⁤ for ⁤the Red⁢ Bull Bora-Hansgrohe devo team, Finn is contracted through 2026, but his performance suggests a ⁢potential fast track to the ‌WorldTour team featuring Remco Evenepoel and primož Roglič.

“It’s exactly one year, it’s like last ‌year,⁣ it’s just unreal,” Finn said at the finish. “My ears were hurting ‍becuase there were ‍so many people from different nations cheering me on. The people here⁢ in Kigali are ⁣fantastic. It’s been a marvelous week.⁢ Obviously there’s ‍the result, but I’ll remember‍ this for the rest of my life.”

Jan⁢ Huber held on for second place, while ‌Marco⁣ Schrettl (Austria) finished third. The 165km race ‍saw Finn animate the front group with an attack at‍ 32km to go, initially joined only by Huber. He then unleashed a ‍series‌ of accelerations on the Côte de Kigali in the ⁣final lap, proving too strong for his rival.

Pre-race ⁣favorite Jarno Widar (Belgium) was caught out‍ by Finn’s early move and⁣ unable to mount a successful chase. USA’s Cole Kessler was dropped⁣ from the bunch ‌around 50km to go, ‌finishing 22nd, nearly ‍9 minutes behind the winner. More than half the‌ starting field did not finish, with only 56 riders ⁢reaching the finish⁢ line.

Isaac del Toro Could Knock Over Pogacar at UCI Road Worlds

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 27, 2025

Del Toro Positions Himself as ⁤Primary Challenger to pogačar at World Championships

Kigali, Rwanda – Isaac del Toro‌ has ‌emerged ‍as the rider most capable of challenging Tadej Pogačar‘s ⁤dominance at the UCI Road world⁣ Championships on Sunday, according to ‍pre-race analysis. The Mexican‍ rider’s strong performance in⁣ the time trial - finishing fifth, just five ⁣seconds off the podium – coupled with his ⁢recent racing alongside Pogačar, has positioned him as a meaningful threat in the‍ demanding road race.

The 251.2-kilometer course features nine‍ laps on a longer circuit, followed by a pivotal climb at Mount Kigali, and concludes with‍ seven laps on⁣ a closing circuit containing two climbs.‍ Pogačar is widely expected to launch an ⁢attack, but the timing and location ⁢remain ‌uncertain.

“The longer climb at Mount Kigali should suit me best. ‌The only problem is‍ that it is‍ indeed still far from‌ the finish line,” Pogačar stated. “From me, they should have put it closer to the finish‍ line.” He downplayed the course’s overall difficulty, noting, “You have two climbs⁣ in the circuit,‍ but there is also a lot of descent‍ in it, and you get those kilometers for free.”

the concern for rival nations – Belgium, Spain, Denmark, and Britain – is preventing Pogačar from gaining an unassailable lead, as he did ⁢with a‍ 100km solo ⁢effort last year.Del Toro is identified as a key rider who could capitalize on any prospect.

Adding a‌ complex dynamic to the race is the presence ‍of multiple UAE Emirates-XRG riders capable of contending for a medal, ‍including Juan Ayuso, Jay Vine, ⁤and Pavel Sivakov. While riders represent their national teams, trade team allegiances⁤ could influence race tactics.⁤ Pogačar and Del Toro have demonstrated a close ‍relationship, even training together on Friday over the‌ race loop.

“That’s what makes ‘El Torito’ the most intriguing wild card in Kigali,” the analysis notes. Del Toro’s recent experience racing alongside Pogačar‍ may have provided valuable insights, and if‍ he can maintain his form throughout the seven-hour race, he could potentially challenge for the victory. For ‍Pogačar, Del Toro represents a significant internal challenge ⁤within⁤ his own team structure.
