“Goldenโ rain” Treeโค Extracts Show Promise as Eco-Friendly Palm Horn Beetle Control
KUALA LUMPUR – Research has uncovered that extracts from the โฃ S. multijuga tree, commonly known as “golden rain,” possess both attractant and โขinsecticidal properties against the damaging palm horn beetle, offering a perhaps cheaper, more efficient, and environmentally friendly choice to synthetic pesticides.
The findings, recently published by researchers, โreveal that โขsynthetic pheromones derived from the tree can lureโ beetles, while extracts โคfrom its leaves,โ stems, and bark demonstrate direct โtoxicity. This dual-action potential is meaningfulโข for the palmโข oil industry, which faces substantial economic โฃlosses โdue to the palm horn beetle’s destructive feeding habits. The research team believes the active compounds, potentially including โฃpyridine alkaloids found in synthetic insecticides, could โขrevolutionize pest management strategies.
Laboratory tests indicated that leaves were โmostโค effective at killingโ larvae, while stems and bark proved lethal to both larvae and adult beetles. โAdult beetle mortality rates ranged fromโ 12.5% to 25%,and larval mortality ranged fromโข 1.25% to 3.75%. โขWhileโ these percentages โฃare relatively low, researchers confirm the presence of bioactive compounds within the plant.
The discovery opens avenues โfor developing lasting pest control methods, reducingโข relianceโค on syntheticโข chemicals and minimizingโฃ environmental impact. Further research will focus on isolating and synthesizing the specific compounds responsible for the observed effects, paving theโค way for large-scale application in palm oil plantations.
