Are pancakes healthy? Dietitians explain

Are Pancakes Healthy? dietitians Weigh In on the⁣ Breakfast Staple

NEW YORK – Nov.14, 2025 – Pancakes, a beloved ‌breakfast treat, often face scrutiny⁣ regarding their nutritional⁢ value. While⁤ traditionally ⁣viewed ⁣as ⁤an indulgence, dietitians say ‍pancakes can fit‌ into a healthy diet with mindful choices. ‍

Pancakes offer a⁢ base for incorporating beneficial nutrients, explains registered dietitian Lisa Weisenberger. “Fiber⁤ aids⁣ digestion, helps regulate blood sugar ⁢and supports heart health,”⁣ she says. The ⁢carbohydrates in pancakes can also provide quick⁣ energy, and toppings like fruit, nuts, or yogurt‌ can further enhance their ‍nutritional profile with added⁣ vitamins, antioxidants, healthy fats, and⁣ protein.

However, not all pancakes are created equal.⁤ Traditional recipes – notably⁢ those using ⁢refined⁢ white flour ⁤and cooked in ‌butter or oil - “tend to be ⁣high in‌ simple carbohydrates, added ⁤sugars and saturated ⁣fat,” Weisenberger notes. This combination can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, leading to‍ increased hunger and excessive calorie intake. Registered dietitian Melanie ‌Weintraub adds that⁣ some commercial mixes⁢ and restaurant versions may⁤ contain meaningful amounts⁤ of sodium, a concern for individuals ‌managing high blood pressure. sweet toppings like syrup, chocolate chips,or whipped⁣ cream can also contribute excess calories and sugar, perhaps impacting blood sugar and weight management.

Fortunately, ‍simple⁤ adjustments can substantially improve the nutritional value of pancakes. Weintraub advises choosing whole-grain flours, moderating portion sizes, and opting for toppings like fresh‌ fruit, nut ⁤butter, or yogurt. pairing pancakes with ‍protein‍ sources such as‍ eggs, turkey sausage, or Canadian⁢ bacon can⁢ also help balance the meal and mitigate the effects of carbohydrates.

Halloween Memories: A Simple Kindness

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 14, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

VENTURA, CA – November 14, 2025 – ‍A Ventura family experienced a heartwarming ⁢post-Halloween surprise ⁣at a local park yesterday, sparking a ⁣wave of nostalgic generosity for one columnist. While⁣ enjoying⁤ a casual afternoon, the family was approached by‌ a stranger touched by their visible joy, prompting a simple act of kindness that resonated deeply.

The encounter unfolded as the family – two young daughters, their parents, and a third child on the way – enjoyed⁣ a relaxed afternoon in a park. The girls were observed ⁢playing catch with their father, tag with their mother, and generally ‍reveling in‍ childhood fun.

Columnist Woody, witnessing the scene, was transported back to memories of⁤ his own children at similar ages. ⁤The moment triggered a recollection of a past act of kindness received during a ⁣family vacation. Years ago,⁣ while dining at ‍an Italian restaurant, their meal ⁤was anonymously paid for by two elderly gentlemen who simply wanted to brighten a young family’s day.

Inspired,Woody attempted to ‌reciprocate the⁣ gesture, wishing he could have‍ covered the cost of a treat for the family at the park. Unable to do so,he instead⁢ shared ⁤his admiration, learning the sisters are incredibly close and ‍eagerly anticipating the ⁢arrival of a sibling.

As Woody departed, the girls ‌cheerfully wished him a nice day, a sentiment he readily returned, noting his day had already been made brighter by their presence.

The experience prompted Woody to highlight his ongoing “Woody’s Holiday Ball Drive,” currently accepting donations of new sports balls through December 8th. Balls can be ⁤dropped off at Sanbell, 1672 Donlon St. in Ventura, 93003, or delivered ⁤via online orders. Donations and acknowledgements can be coordinated via email at woodywriter@gmail.com.
