Austria Orders YouTube too Comply withโ Dataโฃ Access Requests
Vienna, Austria – September 1, 2025 – Austria’s Data Protection Authority โhas ruled againstโค Google LLCโ (YouTube) โfollowing โขa complaint filed byโข privacyโค advocacy group Noyb (None of Your business) on behalf โof an Austrian โuser, ordering the platform to grant users access toโฃ the dataโ it holds on them andโ facts regarding itsโค usage. The decisionโข marks a victory for โdata privacyโฃ advocates โwho have long argued that major online platforms routinely obstruct users’ rights under the European โunion’sโ General Data โขProtection Regulation (GDPR).
the โcomplaint, lodged in 2019, alleged “structural violations” ofโค EU data regulations by YouTube and other streaming services, including Netflix. โNoyb โขargued that โthe companies failed to adequatelyโ respond to user requests โขfor data access, hinderingโ their ability to exercise rights such as data erasure โor โrectification.
According to Noyb, the regulatorโข confirmed the decision against YouTube on Friday.โ Google now has four weeks to comply with the ruling orโข appeal it.”Making โฃan accessโ request should enable (users) to exerciseโฆ โrights, such as the right to erasure or rectification” of their data,” Noyb stated, adding โคthat โคlengthyโค delaysโค renderโ those rights “unfeasible” to enact. The group expressed regret that it took “fiveโ and a half years” for the โฃauthority toโ reach a decision.
Google has not yet โคresponded toโ a request forโค comment.Noyb โhasโค been actively pursuing legal action against US technology โcompanies, including โขMeta (Facebook โคandโ Instagram), over GDPR violations, filing over 800โฃ complaints across various jurisdictions โขonโ behalf of internet users. Theโฃ GDPR,โ a landmark EU regulation, grantsโ individuals greater control over โฃtheir personal data and imposes obligations on organizationsโข that collect โand processโ it.
