Ambush in Ohio: Two Officers Critically Wounded, Third injured in Lorain Shooting
Lorain, OH – A shocking ambush unfolded in Lorain, Ohio, on Wednesday, leaving two police officers in critical condition and a third with a non-life-threatening injury. The incident, described by law enforcement as a premeditated attack, occurred around 1 p.m. local time at the end of River Bend Drive.The targeted officers, identified as Phillip Wagner and Peter Gale, where reportedly eating lunch in their patrol vehicles when a suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Michael Parker of Lorain, opened fire. Parker, who officials believe acted alone, is reported to have parked his vehicle on Missouri Avenue and waited in ambush with an arsenal of weapons, unleashing multiple rounds from a high-powered rifle at the officers.
The gunfire prompted a call for backup, leading a third officer, Brent Payne, to the scene. Officer Payne was subsequently shot inside his vehicle, sustaining a gunshot wound to the hand.He was transported to Mercy Health and his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Officers returned fire during the confrontation, resulting in the death of the suspect, Michael Parker.
Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley stated that the two critically injured officers were flown to MetroHealth for treatment. “Tragic day in the City of Lorain, but we’re a strong city,” Mayor Bradley commented, assuring the community that there is no ongoing threat.
Acting Lorain Police Chief Michael Failing commended the bravery of the responding officers, particularly Officer Payne, who risked his life to assist his colleagues. “The ones standing behind me, a lot of them responded to this call. I would like to thank them for their bravery. The remarkable response to this tragedy,” Chief Failing said during a press conference, emphasizing the toll the incident has taken on the department and asking for community support through prayers.
Elyria Police Chief Jeff Welsh echoed the sentiment, calling the event an “ambush situation” and a “challenging day for the Lorain Police Department.”
