Argentine authorities have ordered the blocking of streaming platforms Xuper TV and Magis TV after determining they were distributing copyrighted content without authorization. The judicial order, signed by Judge Esteban Rossignoli following an investigation by the Specialized Cybercrime Unit (Ufeic), mandates that technology companies disable access to the applications, even on devices where they are already installed.
The crackdown extends to platforms like Amazon Fire TV, which have fully blocked the applications to restrict access to protected content. The legal action centers on the unauthorized retransmission of films, series, and sporting events, infringing on copyright holders’ rights. The new blocking system identifies apps listed on the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) blacklist, an international organization dedicated to combating audiovisual piracy. When such an app is detected, users receive a warning and the application is automatically deactivated.
Beyond the legal ramifications, security experts warn of the risks associated with using unauthorized streaming platforms. A recent analysis by cybersecurity firm ESET revealed that Magis TV requests critical and invasive permissions inconsistent with a conventional streaming service, potentially enabling malicious activity. ESET classifies the application as a potentially unwanted application (PUA). These permissions include access to running tasks on the device, the ability to mount and unmount removable file systems, and the ability to publish notifications – features that could be exploited for spam or phishing attempts.
The need to install applications via APK files from untrusted sources further exacerbates the security concerns. David González Cuautle, an ESET researcher, stated that the excessive granting of special and critical permissions is a “sign of maliciousness” in these apps, potentially compromising the security of the device and the entire home network. He warned that these applications could serve as entry points for malware, including spyware, Trojans, and tools designed to steal personal information.
As Xuper TV and Magis TV cease operations, authorities are directing users toward legal and free alternatives, including YouTube, Pluto TV, Rakuten TV, RTVE Play, and FilmRise. YouTube, owned by Google, offers a vast catalog of free videos, documentaries, web series, concerts, and educational content. Pluto TV provides live channels and a selection of films and series, while Rakuten TV offers free movies in its “Free” section. RTVE Play is the digital platform of Spanish Radio Television, offering free access to series, films, documentaries, and news programs. FilmRise, a US-based platform, provides ad-funded content.
