Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Prison Sentence
Neuilly-sur-Seine, France – Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, began his prison sentence today after surrendering to authorities. The 68-year-old was convicted on charges of corruption and influence peddling in March 2023, marking a historic moment as the first former French head of state to be incarcerated.
Sarkozy spent his last evening of freedom dining with family and friends at a Parisian restaurant on October 12th. Prior to that, he hosted a farewell cocktail for employees and acquaintances at the Pavillon des Étangs, briefly appearing with his wife, Carla Bruni.Despite the gravity of the situation, Sarkozy reportedly addressed the gathering, stating, “I am here to tell you that the end of the story has not been written.” He intends to use his time in prison to write a book detailing his experiences, and will need to request notepads and pens from prison officials.
The former president is being held in a high-security wing for his protection. He was permitted to bring a scarf no longer than one meter in length, as well as earplugs to mitigate noise. Sarkozy will be allowed to receive visits from family and friends two to three times per week.
Sarkozy’s conviction stems from attempts to illegally obtain information from a judge during a separate investigation into alleged Libyan funding of his 2007 presidential campaign. The case and subsequent sentencing have deeply divided French public opinion and raised questions about the integrity of the country’s political system. He maintains his innocence and has vowed to fight the conviction.
Just prior to his imprisonment,Sarkozy met with current French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday, though details of their discussion have not been publicly released. The outcome of any potential appeals remains to be seen, but for now,Nicolas Sarkozy’s political career is effectively on hold as he begins his sentence.
