by Alex Carter - Sports Editor November 13, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Pirates’ paul Skenes and Tigers’ Tarik Skubal Make‍ History as Cy Young ⁣Award ‍Winners

NEW YORK – In a stunning debut‍ season,Pittsburgh Pirates⁣ pitcher Paul Skenes ⁢has been named ‌the American league Cy young Award winner, while detroit Tigers ‌left-hander Tarik Skubal secured his second consecutive honor. The⁤ announcement marks only the second time since 2001 that the two All-Star Game starting pitchers have both claimed the prestigious award in⁣ the same‌ year, joining⁢ Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens.

The simultaneous recognition of Skenes and Skubal underscores a shift in MLB dominance, signaling the arrival of a new generation of pitching talent. Skenes’ victory is especially⁤ notable as he becomes one ⁤of⁣ the few rookies too ever win the award, while Skubal’s back-to-back ⁣wins cement his status as one of the league’s elite starters. ‍The awards also carry draft implications, as a top-three finish for Houston’s Hunter⁣ Brown⁣ earned the⁤ team an extra pick after the first⁣ round of next July’s amateur draft.

Skenes, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft,⁤ quickly established himself as a force on the mound, ‌showcasing extraordinary velocity and command. Skubal, meanwhile, continued his ascent to stardom, ⁣leading the American League with a 2.21 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 195 1/3 innings during the regular season. He added a 1-0‌ record‍ with a 1.74 ERA in three playoff starts, though the Tigers were ultimately eliminated by Seattle in the Division Series.

“To win this award as many times as you can in yoru ⁤career, but I’d gladly trade a Cy Young for ‍a World ⁤Series,” Skubal said.

Seattle Mariners pitcher ⁢George Kirby finished third in the‍ voting. Houston astros pitcher Hunter⁣ Brown finished in the top three, securing an‌ extra draft pick⁤ for his team.

Elsewhere, Los ⁢Angeles Dodgers two-way star ⁤Shohei Ohtani is favored to win his fourth MVP award, while New York Yankees slugger ⁤Aaron judge⁤ is in contention for his third AL MVP, facing‌ a close vote with seattle catcher⁤ Cal Raleigh. MVP awards for both leagues will be handed out Thursday.

Oscar-nominated actor Sally Kirkland, known for ‘Anna,’ dies

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 11, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Oscar-nominated actor Sally Kirkland, celebrated for her powerful performance ⁣in “Anna“ and a career spanning stage and screen, has died. She was 83. Kirkland passed away February 16, 2024, in Santa Barbara, California, according to news reports.

Kirkland’s death marks the loss of a fiercely independent and often unconventional performer who consistently challenged boundaries throughout her decades-long career. While achieving⁢ mainstream recognition later⁤ in life with her 1987 Academy Award nomination for ⁣”Anna,” Kirkland built a foundation in theater and embraced roles that prioritized artistic expression over conventional stardom. Her⁣ willingness ‌to take risks, ⁢both professionally and ‍personally, made her a unique⁢ figure in Hollywood.

Kirkland began ‌her ⁣career on the stage, immersing herself in the works‍ of William Shakespeare. ⁢Some of‍ her ‌early roles included the lovesick Helena in ”A Midsummer ⁣Night’s Dream” for New York‌ Shakespeare ⁢Festival producer Joseph Papp and Miranda⁣ in an off-Broadway production of “The⁢ Tempest.” “I don’t think any actor‍ can really call ‌him or herself ⁣an actor unless he or she puts in time with ‌shakespeare,” ⁢she told the Los Angeles times ‍in 1991.‍ “It shows up, ‍it always shows‌ up in the‍ work, at some‌ point, whether it’s ⁤just not being able to ‍have breath ‍control, or not⁤ being able‌ to‌ appreciate language as poetry and music, or not‍ having the power ⁢that Shakespeare automatically instills you⁤ with when you take on one of his characters.”

Beyond⁢ Shakespeare, Kirkland’s filmography was diverse, though frequently enough marked⁢ by ‌provocative choices. She reached a career nadir while riding nude ‌on a pig in ⁢the 1969 film “Futz,” which a guardian reviewer ‌dubbed the worst ⁤film he had ⁣ever seen. “It‍ was⁢ about a man who fell in love⁣ with a pig, ⁤and even by the dismal standards of the era, it was dismal,” he wrote. Kirkland⁢ was also known for‍ disrobing for numerous roles and ‍social causes,⁢ leading Time magazine to dub her “the latter-day Isadora Duncan of‌ nudothespianism.”

Despite the controversies, Kirkland remained dedicated to ⁢humanitarian work. She⁤ volunteered ⁣for people with AIDS, cancer and heart disease, fed ‌homeless people via ⁣the American Red Cross, participated in telethons for‌ hospices and was ⁣an advocate for prisoners, especially young people.

Kirkland’s ⁣Oscar nomination for “Anna” - in which she ‍played‍ a recently released convict struggling to rebuild her life – brought her widespread acclaim and solidified her status ‍as a compelling dramatic actress. While she ⁢didn’t win⁤ the award, the recognition ⁢opened doors to further roles. Details regarding memorial services have‍ not yet been announced.

Title: Zohran Mamdani’s New York Victory Sparks Debate and Comparisons Across the Atlantic

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 9, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

PARIS – The victory of Zohran Mamdani in the New York City Council⁣ race is reverberating across the Atlantic, but rather than unifying the French left, it’s exacerbating existing divisions as factions attempt to claim the win as ⁣validation for their own strategies. The debate centers on whether mamdani’s success offers a blueprint for a unified left-wing challenge in France, particularly ahead of upcoming elections.

François ruffin, writing⁣ for HuffPost, highlighted the potential for a⁤ primary election to yield a victorious candidate despite a lack of consensus.Though, the victory has sparked internal clashes, exemplified by an exchange between Sophia Chikirou and Emmanuel Grégoire regarding the Paris mayoral race. Chikirou, responding to Grégoire, asserted, “if you support Zohran Mamdani in New York, you must support ‍La France insoumise in Paris,” framing Mamdani’s win as a mandate for a similar progressive agenda.‍

chikirou further connected mamdani’s success to⁢ specific policy positions: “What makes Zohran’s victory is his ‍program and his positions: attacking the rich, speculation, making public transport‍ free, supporting Palestine, raising the voice of workers against ⁢gentrification.” She directly challenged Grégoire, stating, “This is the ‍opposite of what you’ve been doing for years. You want this program in Paris: vote for La France insoumise!“

The article notes a perceived contrast ⁢in behavior between ‌Mamdani and typical French left-wing politicians, citing Mamdani’s apology ⁣following controversial ⁣statements regarding the NYPD, as reported by Politico on October 15, 2025.

Reactions weren’t limited to the Paris mayoral race.LFI MP Gabrielle cathala criticized Socialist Party leaders⁤ for congratulating Mamdani, tweeting⁢ that he embodies ”a clear anti-racist line, who has been denouncing the genocide in Gaza for months, and ⁤who⁣ has defended ⁤all the arrested pro-Palestinian activists. Which is everything the PS has never done.”

Rima Hassan, a Member of the European‍ Parliament, echoed this⁣ sentiment, stating that some on the left were celebrating Mamdani’s victory without genuinely embracing the “class struggle” ‌or “anti-racist struggle.” Nadège Abomangoli criticized the conduct of those who contested the primary despite their defeat, deeming the primary process ‍itself “rotten.”

The ‌analysis concludes that while Mamdani’s win offers a ‍morale boost, its applicability to the French political landscape remains ⁢uncertain⁢ due to essential differences in party culture and⁤ campaigning styles.⁢ The election, the article suggests,is being interpreted through the lens of individual political agendas, with the hope that victories are achievable both in France‍ and abroad.

Trump Pardons NYPD Sergeant Convicted of Helping China Repress Critic

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 8, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

US President Donald Trump granted a pardon on Friday to a former New York police sergeant who was convicted of helping China try to scare an ex-official into going back to his homeland, a prominent case in US authorities’ efforts to combat what they claim are Beijing’s far-flung efforts to repress critics.

Michael McMahon was sentenced this spring to 18 months in prison for his involvement in what a federal judge called “a campaign of transnational repression”.

He insisted he was innocent, saying he was “unwittingly used” when he took what he thought was a straightforward private investigator gig. McMahon said he was told he was working for a Chinese construction company, not the nation’s government.

A White House official, speaking on Friday on condition of anonymity to discuss a pardon that had not been publicly announced, pointed to McMahon’s explanation that he had been misled.

The official also noted that McMahon earned dozens of commendations before a 2001 injury ended his 14-year NYPD career.
