Researchers Launch Legal Challenge toโค tech Giants Over Data access, Citing DSA โShortcomings
Berlin – A coalition of research organizations is initiating legal action โagainst Facebook, โคX (formerly Twitter),โค and other major tech companies, โฃdemanding greater clarity regarding their data practices under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). The โฃ”mass request” for data, launched today, aims to force the platforms to disclose information โcrucial for autonomous โanalysis of algorithmic processes and content moderation – access the companies have so far largely denied.
The DSA,โฃ which came into effect three years ago, was intended to โprovide a framework โforโ democratic oversight of large onlineโ platforms.โ However, researchers argue the law’s potential remains largely untapped due to insufficient enforcement and loopholes exploited by tech firms.โฃ Specifically, they criticize the platforms’ reluctance to share data necessaryโ to understand how algorithms shape information access and โฃthe impact of features likeโ AI-powered search summaries on โnews publishers. These summaries, offered by search engines like Google, divert traffic โขfrom news sources, possibly undermining the financial viability ofโข quality journalism, researchers โขclaim.
The organizations involved are prepared to pursue legal remedies to compel data disclosure. They emphasize the growing risks posed byโ opaque algorithms and the increasing alignment โof tech โexecutives with anti-democraticโ movements in Europe and the โUnited States, highlighting the critical need โฃforโค effective DSAโฃ implementation. โฃ “The DSA exists as an instrument for democratic control,” stated a representative,”but the regulation remains a construction โsite.” They hopeโ toโข see the DSA’sโ potential fully โฃrealized in the coming year.
