Across two seasons, the Fifteenth Doctor got just 16 episodes of Doctor Whoplus two Christmas specials, and his era ended with a confusing regeneration and some intense uncertainty over what will come next for the long-running sci-fi series. You wonโt get any concrete answers from its most recent showrunnerRussell T Davisโand the outgoing Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, is also proving to be similarly unhelpful.
Granted, itโs likely Gatwa is past the point of having much insider info; he finished his time on the show and has moved on to the next stage of his career. It happens to actors who become associated with certain characters all the time, even the Doctor.
And according to the Radio Timesciting an interview Gatwa did on British radio show Todaythe star doesnโt have anything to share about the next Doctorโs identity. His series ended with Billie Piper, who famously played past Companion Rose Tyler, emerging from the regeneration processโbut as fans noticed, Piper didnโt get an end-credits designation saying she was playing the Doctor, as is the tradition.
Hereโs what Gatwa said about it: โIโve finished playing Doctor Who, we all saw the gold sparkleโor did we, I donโt know? I just donโt know who the next Doctor Who is, but itโs certainly not me.โ
Putting aside the fact that he called the character โDoctor Who,โ which is not the tradition, Gatwa sounds quite convincing about not knowing what comes next. That puts him in the same boat as all us regular fans.
So far all thatโs known about the future of Doctor Who on TV is as follows: a spin-off series, The War Between the Land and Seais coming soon, and the BBC might make an animated version of the show aimed at preschoolers. For now, let the speculation continue.
