San Francisco Braces for Federal โActionโ despite Postponed ‘Surge’
SAN FRANCISCO – Plans for a โฃvisible surge of federal law โenforcement in โsan Francisco this Saturday have been put on โขhold following assurances from figures like Salesforce CEO Marcโฃ Benioff and others who expressed confidence in the city’s future. However, activists and residents remain wary, and organizing efforts to counter potential immigration raids are continuingโค across the Bay Area.
The shift comes amidโค growing tension โfollowing the deployment of approximately 100 โfederal law enforcement agents to Coast Guard Island in Alameda earlier this week. Federal officials haveโค stated the base is serving as a staging area for upcomingโ immigration enforcementโ actions. News of the deployment quickly spread, leading to โคa blockadeโค of the island’s โขsingle access road.
On Thursday morning, around โ200 protesters gathered to disrupt agent movements, resulting in clashes, according โคto reports from the Alameda Post.
Local organizing groupโ Bay Resistance hosted an educational webinar Wednesday night that drew over 5,000 attendees,โ exceeding the capacity of their โฃZoom subscription, with hundreds more โviewing โขa recording afterward.
“The Bay is not going โขto sit quietly,” Bay Resistance organizer Emily Lee stated during the mobilization call. “We are definitely going to be standing up together against this โฃmanagement.”
Organizers shared plans for upcoming actions, drawing on strategies employed โขby activists in Los Angeles who resisted ICE raids and federal deployments,โข and referencing theโ tactics used in Portland, Oregon – including theโข use of humorโข and inflatable โคanimals – to counter federal โactions โฃandโ challengeโข negative portrayals of theโ city. The webinar featured English presentations with Spanish translations.
