Mexico is battling a growing measles outbreak, with 7,168 confirmed cases and 24 deaths reported as of January 19, 2026, according to the Secretariat of Health. The surge in cases has prompted a nationwide reinforcement of vaccination efforts, including the administration of a “zero dose” vaccine to bolster immunity.
The current outbreak initially surfaced in February 2025 in Chihuahua, where a significant proportion of infections were linked to incomplete or absent vaccination records. Data indicates that over 90 percent of confirmed cases involve individuals with no prior vaccination history.
Authorities have observed that severe cases and fatalities are disproportionately concentrated among young children, individuals suffering from malnutrition, and those with compromised immune systems. The government has secured 27.3 million vaccine doses for 2026, asserting sufficient supply to address the outbreak.
The increase in measles cases comes after Mexico had maintained a polio-free status for 35 years, a success attributed to coordinated vaccination programs. However, health officials are also noting a rise in imported cases – individuals contracting the virus outside of Mexico – adding another layer of complexity to the current situation.
Health authorities are urging citizens to verify and complete their vaccination schedules, particularly adults who lack documentation of prior immunization. The Secretariat of Health has not yet announced specific plans for addressing the imported cases beyond the broader vaccination campaign.
