Apple Hikes MacBook Prices Due to Global Memory Chip Crisis & AI Demand

Apple significantly increased prices for its newly released MacBook lineup on Tuesday, with some models seeing price hikes of up to $400, a direct consequence of a global memory chip shortage fueled by surging demand from the artificial intelligence industry.

The tech giant unveiled the new MacBooks, powered by the M5 chip, which it touts as offering substantial performance gains, particularly in AI-related tasks. However, the price increases have overshadowed the launch, impacting both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines.

The 13-inch MacBook Air now starts at $1,099, a $100 increase, while the 15-inch model begins at $1,299. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip sees a $200 price jump to $2,199, and the 16-inch version now starts at $2,699. The most substantial increase is reserved for the top-end configuration featuring the M5 Max chip, which now carries a starting price of $3,599 – a $400 premium.

Apple is partially offsetting the price increases by doubling the base storage capacity on many models. The MacBook Air now comes standard with 512GB of storage, while M5 Pro models begin with 1TB.

The price adjustments reflect a broader shift within the semiconductor industry. Major memory manufacturers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, are prioritizing the production of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a specialized chip crucial for the data centers driving the AI revolution, according to industry analysts. This shift is creating a significant imbalance in the supply of conventional DRAM and NAND storage, used in laptops and smartphones.

TrendForce, a market research firm, has dramatically revised its forecasts, predicting a 90 to 95 percent increase in DRAM contract prices for the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter, significantly higher than the initially projected 55 to 60 percent rise. NAND storage is also expected to see a price increase of 55 to 60 percent.

Apple is not alone in facing this challenge. The memory shortage is disrupting the entire tech hardware sector. Even Samsung, a leading memory producer, has acknowledged the global crisis and anticipates it will persist through 2027. Gartner forecasts that combined DRAM and SSD prices will rise by 130 percent by the end of 2026, increasing the average PC price by 17 percent and causing a 10.4 percent decline in worldwide shipments this year. The firm suggests the entry-level PC market, under $500, could disappear entirely by 2028 as manufacturers struggle to absorb the increased costs. IDC similarly predicts an 11.3 percent decline in the global PC market for 2026.

Apple’s long-term supply contracts and substantial financial reserves provide a degree of stability that smaller competitors lack. Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the rising cost of memory during a January earnings call with analysts. The decision to increase base storage is seen as a strategic move to justify the higher entry prices with a tangible benefit for consumers.

Experts agree that the memory shortage is not a temporary disruption but a long-term challenge. The sustained demand from the AI sector is expected to strain supply chains well into 2027, likely resulting in prolonged higher prices for consumer electronics and less dramatic performance improvements in future models. Analysts at Gartner and IDC anticipate consumers will hold onto their devices for longer periods, fundamentally altering traditional upgrade cycles.
