Meta Faces Major โFine in Spainโ Over Data Use โfor Advertising
A Spanish court,presided over โขby Judge Teodoro Ladrรณn Roda,has ruled against Meta,the โparent companyโ of Facebook,instagram,and โWhatsApp,in a lawsuitโ broughtโ by overโค 80 Spanishโ newspapers,including EL PAรS,collectively represented byโ the โInformation Media Association (AMI). The ruling condemns Meta for gaining an unfair competitive advantage through theโ illegal processing โof user dataโค forโฃ personalized advertising.
The total damages awarded amount to overโ 540 million euros. This breaks down toโค 479 โคmillion euros plus 60 million euros in interest forโค the publishing companies and advertisingโฃ rights holders, 2.5 million euros plus 328,000 euros โin interest for the Europa Press agency,and over 14,000 euros for Radio Blanca.

AMI argued that Meta’s segmented advertisingโฃ did not secure โคthe necessary user permission โคfor โคdataโฃ utilization during this period. The plaintiffsโ initiallyโค estimated losses of 551 million โeuros due to this unfair competition, a figure closely reflected in the court’s decision.
The Spanish press accused Meta of “obtaining in a global, absolute, systematicโ andโข unlimited manner the personal dataโ of โits services on a โขEuropean scale”โ without properโข consent or legal justification.โค This โpractice, they argued, allowed Meta โtoโ significantly expand its advertising business โat theโ expense of โคits competitors and threatened “the sustainability of theโฃ media” and “the right to information of Spanish โcitizens.”
