Morocco Increases Funding for Healthcare and Education Following Protests
Rabat, Morocco – Morocco will considerably increase investment in healthcare and education for 2026, allocating over 13 billion euros – a 16 percent increase compared to this year – following weeks of demonstrations demanding improved social services and an end to corruption, the royal palace announced today.
The move addresses key demands made by young protestors who took to the streets in recent weeks, voicing concerns over systemic issues within the country. Demonstrations in several Moroccan cities resulted in clashes with security forces, leading to hundreds of injuries, reported deaths, and numerous arrests. Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch earlier this month pledged to address the concerns of the demonstrators, though specifics remained unclear until today’s declaration.
The increased funding aims to improve access to quality healthcare and education, issues central to the protests. Beyond financial investment in these sectors, the Council of Ministers, chaired by King Mohammed VI, also announced measures to combat corruption ahead of upcoming elections. These include barring politicians convicted of crimes or misdemeanors from participating and providing financial support to candidates under 35 to facilitate their campaigns.
