Denza D9 Sales Performance in Indonesia: BYD’s Premium MPV

Denza, BYDS premium sub-brand, has rapidly gained traction in Indonesia, achieving critically important sales figures within its first seven months of operation. The Denza D9, the brand’s sole offering in the Indonesian market, is challenging established players in the luxury MPV segment.

Denza entered the Indonesian market targeting affluent consumers seeking a premium Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), directly competing with models like the Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, and lexus LM350.

The introduction of Denza aims to attract consumers to the premium electric MPV market.

The Denza D9 was launched on January 22, 2025, with a price of Rp. 950 million (on-the-road Jakarta). This pricing strategy, coupled with comprehensive after-sales support, is a key component of Denza’s market entry.

Denza provides a 6-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/150,000 km motor warranty, and an 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty, demonstrating confidence in its product and commitment to customer satisfaction.

Sales data indicates the Denza D9 is a major contributor to BYD’s overall sales performance in Indonesia. Since its launch, over five thousand luxury electric MPVs have been delivered to customers.

According to wholesale data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), Denza distributed 6,256 units to dealerships. This performance places Denza as the 13th best-selling car brand in Indonesia.

Retail sales figures show 5,516 Denza D9 units were delivered to consumers, securing the brand the 11th position in the best-selling car brand rankings, trailing Wuling’s 10,971 units. March saw the highest retail sales with 1,801 units, followed by June with 1,128 units.

BYD currently operates five dedicated Denza dealerships in major Indonesian cities, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Medan. Plans are underway to expand this network with the addition of five more dealerships in the near future, aiming to enhance accessibility and customer service.

BYD’s President Director, **Eagle Zhao**, revealed that the company’s ability to produce nearly all components in-house is the primary driver behind the Atto 1’s aggressive pricing. This “vertical integration” extends to critical electric vehicle technologies, including batteries, electric motors, and semiconductors.

“BYD is the only automotive manufacturer that has technology such as batteries, electric motors and even semiconductors themselves. Not only the technology itself, in terms of the main components of BYD producing themselves. So far, except for glass and tires, BYD has the ability to produce independently. This self-sufficiency allows BYD to bypass the markups often associated with sourcing components from third-party suppliers. For context, the global average cost of producing an electric vehicle battery pack has seen fluctuations, with some reports indicating a slight increase in early 2024 after a period of decline, highlighting the significance of BYD’s in-house production capabilities (BloombergNEF, 2024).

Indonesia: A Strategic Launchpad

Indonesia holds a special place in BYD’s global strategy for the Atto 1. The company spent two years conducting in-depth research into the Indonesian city car market before making the right-hand drive Atto 1 its debut model in the country.

The BYD Atto 1 is offered in two trims: the Dynamic, priced at Rp 195 million, and a premium version at Rp 235 million, both on-the-road in Jakarta. These prices notably fall below their respective Non-Tax Vehicle Selling Values (NJKB) in Jakarta, which stand at Rp 218 million and Rp 233 million.

Performance and Features

The Atto 1 Dynamic variant is equipped with a 30.08 kWh blade battery, providing a range of up to 300 km. The premium variant boasts a larger 38.88 kWh battery, extending the range to 380 km. Both models are powered by an electric motor delivering 75 kW of power and 135 Nm of torque, capable of a top speed of 120 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 50 km/h is achieved in a brisk 4.9 seconds.

With dimensions of 3,925 mm in length, 1,720 mm in width, and 1,590 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm, the Atto 1 is designed for urban agility. Its ground clearance is 155 mm.

Available color options include Sprout Green, Apricity White, and Cosmos Black. The car features a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a parking camera, and three parking sensors, enhancing its appeal to tech-savvy consumers.

Daihatsu sigra Leads the Pack as LCGC Sales Decline in First Half of 2025

jakarta – Sales of Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) models experienced a significant downturn in the first half of 2025, with a 28.5 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. A total of 64,063 LCGC units where sold between January and June 2025, marking a drop of 25,580 units.

Monthly sales figures reveal a consistent decline:
January: 12,324 units
 February: 13,618 units
March: 12,726 units
 April: 9,087 units
May: 8,546 units
 June: 7,762 units

Despite the sluggish market,the daihatsu Sigra emerged as the top-selling LCGC model,with 21,029 units sold in the first semester.The Honda Brio Satya secured the second position with 18,233 units, followed by the Toyota Calya, a popular MPV, which sold 14,359 units. The Daihatsu Ayla ranked fourth with 6,434 units,and its counterpart,the Toyota Agya,rounded out the top five with 4,008 units sold.The affordability that once defined the LCGC segment has diminished. Prices, which started around Rp 76 million in 2013, have now climbed to approximately Rp 138 million for the cheapest models, with some reaching up to rp 200 million. This price increase is attributed to several factors,including inflation,currency depreciation,and tax adjustments.

Historically, LCGCs benefited from being exempt from luxury tax (PPnBM), a factor that significantly boosted car sales in Indonesia, reaching a record high of 1,229,811 units in 2013. However, the current fiscal landscape, including a Value Added Tax (VAT) increase to 12%, coupled with other levies, has placed a greater financial burden on consumers seeking these entry-level vehicles.
