Ministry of Trade to Pursue legal Action Regarding Gold’s Gym Closures, Consumer Complaints
The Ministry of Trade is escalating its response toโ complaints โfrom Gold’s Gym membersโ affected โby the closure of multiple โฃoutlets in Jakarta,โ bekasi, and Surabaya, signaling a potential legal case against PT Fit and Health Indonesia, the company operating the fitness centers. Theโ move comes as โconsumers report being left without access to โคfacilities despite having prepaid membership fees and not receiving promisedโ compensation.
According to aโค press release from the Ministry of Trade, officials are interveningโค to protect Indonesian โconsumers and โคensure accountability following the abrupt shutdown of โ11 Gold’s Gym locations. “This step was taken asโค an effort to increase the implementationโ ofโ consumer protection โas a form of the presence of the state in protecting Indonesian consumers,” stated Moga, a representative โof the Ministry.
Initially, PT Fit and Health โฃIndonesiaโ hadโค planned to close only five Jakarta outlets to improve the company’s โfinancial standing, with intentionsโ toโฃ maintain other locations. Though, internalโค issues led to a โฃwider closure encompassingโ outlets in Jakarta, Bekasi, andโค Surabaya, according to Ghifar Hilmi, the company’s attorney.
the company has as filed for a postponement ofโ debt โคpayment obligationsโ (PKPU) at the Central Jakarta Commercial Court. Hilmi explained that if the โฃPKPU is approved, affected Gold’sโฃ Gym members and other creditors can submit claims for losses with supporting โdocumentation to perhaps receiveโค restitution fromโค PT Fit and Health Indonesia. The refund process, however, will be contingent on a judge’s decision regarding the PKPU.
Thisโข development follows earlier reports โof members and employees filing a police report alleging fraud related to unpaid salaries and membership issues.
