Indonesia Attracts $15 Trillion in EV Investment as Factoryโค Construction Accelerates
Jakarta,โฃ Indonesia – A surgeโค of investment is fueling the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicleโฃ (EV) industry, with six companiesโ poised to inject Rp 15 โฃtrillion (approximately $960 million USD) โขinto the sector, according to the Ministry ofโข Industry. The investments will โsignificantly boost production capacity,adding 305,000 unitsโข annually,and solidify โIndonesia’s position as a key player in the burgeoning Southeast Asian EV market.The Ministry’s latest update,โ delivered by Director of Maritime Industry, Transportation Equipment,โฃ and Defense equipment (Ilamatap) Mahardi Tunggul Wicaksono, details โthe โprogress of โcompanies participating inโค Indonesia’s importedโค electric car incentive โคprogram. The program โฃaims to โencourage EV adoption and local manufacturing.
“Two companies areโ in collaboration with Assembler Local, PT Geelyโ Motor Indonesia โขand PT Era โคIndustri Automotive,” Wicaksono stated โคat the โฃMinistry ofโ Industryโข Office. “Two companies are expanding production capacity, PT Nationalโ Assemblers โand PT Inchcape Indomobil Energi Baru, and two companies areโ building new factories, PT byd Auto Indonesia and PTโข Vinfast Automobile Indonesia.”
Leading the Charge:โ BYD and VinFast
BYD Auto Indonesia is โฃspearheading โคtheโ investment with a Rp 11.2 trillion (approximately $720 million USD) commitment to build a new factory in Subang, west Java. โ The facility, planned for a production โคcapacity of 150,000 โunits per year, is โคcurrently โ45% complete and slated for completion in may 2025.
VinFast is alsoโค making significantโ strides, with its own factory in Subang, West Java,โ reaching 77% completion. The Vietnamese automaker is investing Rp โ3.5 trillion (approximately $224 million USD) in the project,โข aiming for an annual production capacity ofโข 50,000โฃ units.
Collaboration andโข Expansion Driveโ Growth
Beyond the new factory construction,โ several manufacturers โคare leveraging existing infrastructure throughโข partnerships:
PT Geely Motorโ Indonesia is collaborating withโ local assemblers โคfor Geely vehicles.
PT Era Industri Automotive is partnering โขfor the assembly of Xpeng EVs.
* PT National Assemblers will handle assembly โคfor โฃCitroen, Aion, Maxus, and โคVolkswagen.
The incentive program also โฃincludes Citroen,Aion,Maxus,VW,BYD,Geely,Vinfast,Xpeng,and Great โขWall motorsโฃ (GWM).
Indonesia’s EVโ ambitions: A regional Hub
Indonesia’s push for EV development is part of a broader strategy toโ become a โregional hub โforโ EV manufacturing โคand battery โขproduction. The country possesses abundant reserves โขof nickel, a crucial component in EV batteries, giving it a competitive advantage. โฃThe goverment has โฃoffered a range of incentives, including tax breaks and subsidies, to โฃattract foreign investment and stimulate domestic demand.
