Microsoft โTeams Boosts Security to Shield Usersโ From Phishing Attacks
REDMOND, WA – โMicrosoft is rolling out a new security feature for Teams designed to proactively โคwarn users aboutโฃ malicious links shared inโข chats and duringโ video calls. The update, integrated with โขMicrosoft Defender forโค Office 365, aims to protect โคthe platform’s over 320 million โคmonthly active users from increasingly complex phishing, spam, and malware attacks.
The new functionality flags โpotentially โคharmfulโ URLs โinโ both internal and external conversations, operating similarly to spam filters in Gmail or SMS text message filteringโ apps.โ Microsoft will display a warning banner on messages containing URLs identifiedโ as unsafe, โmirroring โtheโข alert system already in placeโค for Outlook. These linksโฃ are assessed using Microsoft Defender’s threat intelligenceโ andโ AI-based detection, โคworking in conjunction with existingโค security tools like Safe Links andโข zero-Trust Access Policy (ZAP).
The system โoperates in five โฃkey steps: First, a โwarning โขappears in the chat whenโข a flagged URL is detected. Second,โข senders are notified if a link they shared is flagged, with options to editโ or โขdelete the message. Third,URLs are continuously re-evaluated โคeven after delivery. Fourth, if โa link is determined to be malicious within 48 hours of delivery,โ a warning banner is retroactively added toโค the message. this ensuresโข previously delivered โคmessages containing harmfulโ links are also flagged.
A public preview ofโฃ the updateโ will โbeginโ for โenterprise customers โฃin โearly September 2025, with worldwide general availability expected by mid-November 2025. The โfeature will be available across desktop, web, Android, and iOS โversions of Microsoft Teams.
